Sharon D. Heaston. LMFT

Sharon D. Heaston. LMFT I provide mental health services to adults who are suffering from grief, loss and trauma. I am trained in EMDR and have been practicing for over 20 years.

Sometimes llfe throws us curves that we aren't expecting. It isn't always easy to deal with change. Oftentimes, some of the discomfort or sadness that we are experiencing in the present can be tied back to some trauma that occurred in the past. I received training in EMDR Therapy, which is an excellent technique to help people process their traumatic event(s). EMDR helps people use their own resou

rces to move past the trauma and become happier individuals. The American Psychiatric Association has recommended EMDR therapy as an excellent treatment for decreasing the effects of trauma. I offer counseling to individuals, couples, families and groups. I also offer court approved Co-Parenting and Child Custody Evaluations. My Practice also includes performing Psychological Evaluations for clients seeking clearances for surgical procedures. Everyone needs someone to talk to who will listen without judgment. I help my clients by walking beside them through their transitions. Everyone needs a listening ear and I hope mine will be yours. I specialize in the following:
Military

Emotional Health

Career Planning

Anger

Aging

ADHD

Addictions

ℹ🌿 THE PROBLEM ISN’T YOUR MOTIVATION, IT’S YOUR WOUND |

A woman in her mid-forties walks into a therapist’s office with a broken leg. She is at her wits’ end. Sitting down in the therapist’s chair, she says, “I’m so frustrated. I’ve been trying to run a marathon for years, but I just can’t do it. There must be something wrong with me. I try to get out of bed to train, but I just don’t want to. Even when I force myself, I can’t go nearly as far as everyone else. It is like I’m somehow deficient. After practicing, I am in so much agony that I have to take pain killers. Other people can run without resorting to pain killers. I just don’t understand what is wrong with me.”

What is the first thing you would say to this person? “The problem is your broken leg.”

ℹ️🌿 EMOTIONAL INVALIDATION: A FORM OF EMOTIONAL ABUSE |

Emotional invalidation is painful. Sometimes it’s unintentional, but it’s a sign of emotional abuse when done repeatedly and intentionally

Have others minimized, shamed, or invalidated your feelings?

Having your feelings diminished, ignored, or rejected is a painful experience for all of us – but even more so if you’re a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) or survivor of abuse or other trauma.

The ultimate goal in the aftermath of a fight is to have dialogue about the underlying issues that started it. Miscommunication, or a lack of communication, can cause further unnecessary conflict. Relationship conflict should be seen as an opportunity to work together and grow as a couple.
