Medical Myth: You Don’t Need 10,000 Steps a Day

You’ve probably heard that you need to walk 10,000 steps a day to be healthy.
The truth? That number wasn’t created by scientists — it came from a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign for a step counter called the manpo-kei, which means “10,000-step meter.”

Walking is great for your health, but the magic isn’t in the number.
If you usually walk 5,000 steps a day, and you increase it to 7,000, 8,000, or 9,000, you’ll still get major health benefits. The real goal is to move more than you currently do — not to chase a specific number.

You don’t need a step counter, smartwatch, or fancy pedometer.
Just make an effort to add more activity into your day: take the stairs, go for a walk after meals, or park a little farther away.

Bottom line: More movement is better, no matter what your step count is. Focus on building the habit — your body will thank you!

🌿 Exploring Natural Options for Depression & Anxiety
If you're dealing with depression or anxiety but want to avoid prescription antidepressants, you're not alone. Many people are looking into natural alternatives, and research is starting to show that a few supplements may offer real benefits.

🧪 What the Research Says
Recent studies have highlighted four natural products that have shown promise in helping with mood:

St. John’s Wort

Saffron

Probiotics

Vitamin D

Here’s what we know so far:

🌼 St. John’s Wort
What it is: An herbal supplement often used for mood support.

How it works: May boost serotonin, similar to how some antidepressants work.

Evidence: Many studies found it as effective—or even more effective—than some antidepressants.

Caution: It can interfere with medications like antidepressants, birth control pills, and blood thinners.

Typical dose: 300 mg, taken 3 times per day, but always check with your provider before starting.

🌸 Saffron
What it is: A spice derived from a flower, traditionally used in cooking and herbal medicine.

How it works: Believed to have mood-lifting properties.

Evidence: Clinical trials have shown it may work as well as some antidepressants.

Typical dose: Around 30 mg per day, divided into two doses.

☀️ Vitamin D
Why it matters: Low vitamin D is linked to mood disorders like depression.

Who may need it: Those who don’t get enough sunlight or have been tested with low levels.

Typical dose: If deficient, 1,000–2,000 IU daily is commonly used; some may need higher doses based on lab results. Your doctor should test your levels before starting.

⚠️ Important Reminders:
“Natural” doesn’t always mean “safe.” Always talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new supplement—especially if you're already taking medications.

Getting the right dose is key. Too little may not help, and too much can be harmful or interact with other treatments.

These supplements are not FDA-approved for depression but may be worth considering as part of a larger care plan.

If you're looking for alternatives and want support navigating options like these, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. There may be a personalized, natural path that works for you. 💚

Long-term exercise using weighted vests prevents hip bone loss in postmenopausal women

PMID: 10995045 DOI: 10.1093/gerona/55.9.m489
Abstract
Background: Bone mineral density (BMD) is a primary risk factor for hip fracture. We studied the effect of long-term weighted vest plus jumping exercise on hip BMD in postmenopausal women as a strategy for reducing hip fracture risk.

Methods: Eighteen postmenopausal women (age = 64.1 +/- 1.6 years at baseline, 69.9 +/- 1.6 years at post-testing) who had participated in a 9-month exercise intervention volunteered for the long-term trial. Nine of the original group engaged in weighted vest plus jumping exercise three times per week for 32 weeks of the year over a period of 5 years. Nine of the original controls were active but not enrolled in the exercise program. BMD of the proximal femur was assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry at baseline and after 5 years.

Results: At baseline, groups were similar for age, weight, height, years past menopause, and BMD of the femoral neck, trochanter, and total hip. At follow-up, differences in BMD at all regions of the hip were higher in exercisers than controls. For exercisers, changes in BMD were + 1.54% +/- 2.37%, -0.24% +/- 1.02%, and -0.82% +/- 1.04% (means + SE) at the femoral neck, trochanter, and total hip, respectively; controls decreased at all sites (-4.43% +/- 0.93%. 3.43% +/- 1.09%, and -3.80% +/- 1.03%, respectively).

Conclusions: A 5-year program of weighted vest plus jumping exercise maintains hip BMD by preventing significant bone loss in older postmenopausal women. Furthermore, this particular program appears to promote long-term adherence and compliance, as evidenced by the commitment of the exercisers for more than 5 years.

Want to build bone and muscle while losing fat? Consider using a weighted vest.

A weighted vest can be an incredibly effective tool to boost strength, support bone health, and enhance fat loss—especially when used consistently and correctly.

✅ How to Start:
Choose a vest that can ultimately reach 10% of your current body weight

Begin with just 5 lbs for the first 1–2 weeks to allow your body to adjust

Gradually increase to the target 10% of your body weight

Wear it for 1 hour per day during low-impact activities like walking or household chores

🔑 Why It Works:
Wearing a weighted vest adds resistance, turning daily movement into a low-impact strength-building workout

Helps burn more calories, build lean muscle, and stimulate bone density

Backed by research from sources like ACE Fitness and ScienceDaily, showing that consistent use can improve fitness, body composition, and metabolic health

🛒 Where to Get One:
If you're ready to try it, consider a high-quality option like the Hyperwear Weighted Vest, which is designed for comfort and adjustability—ideal for beginners.

💡 Bonus Tip:
If you're using the vest for osteoporosis or bone health, you may be eligible for FSA or HSA reimbursement. Check with your plan administrator and ask your provider for a letter of medical necessity if required.

Remember: The results come from consistency and tolerance—not intensity alone. Start small, build gradually, and pair it with a healthy diet and regular movement for long-term success.

⚠️ Lifeline Screening: What You Need to Know Before You Pay Out-of-Pocket ⚠️
Thinking about signing up for a Lifeline Screening? Before you do, please consider the following clinical concerns and limitations associated with these mass screening services:

🔍 1. Non-Targeted, Non-Guideline-Based Testing
Many of the tests offered—such as carotid ultrasounds or abdominal aortic aneurysm screenings—are not recommended unless you have specific risk factors or meet certain age criteria.
📌 National guidelines (USPSTF, AHA, etc.) support selective, not routine, screening.

⚠️ 2. Risk of False Positives and Overdiagnosis
Screenings outside of medical context can lead to:

Unnecessary anxiety

Costly follow-up testing

Invasive procedures with no proven benefit and real risk

🔄 3. No Continuity of Care
These companies do not manage your results long-term. Abnormal findings are often handed off to your primary care provider:

Without clinical interpretation

Without clear next steps

Leading to fragmented or redundant care

🧪 4. Quality and Oversight Concerns
Screenings are frequently performed by non-clinical technicians, not licensed medical providers. This raises valid concerns about:

Accuracy of the testing

Quality of interpretation

Lack of personalized care

✅ What Should You Do Instead?
📣 Talk to your medical provider before scheduling any preventive screenings.
They will help you:

Determine if the test is truly needed

Ensure it's covered by insurance

Integrate results into your overall care plan

💬 If you're unsure about a screening you’ve been offered, please ask us first. We’re here to guide you based on evidence-based recommendations and your individual health needs.

Dear KFP Patients Who Have Been Filling GLP-1 or GIP Medications at Rite Aid (NH),

This message is specifically for patients who have been filling their prescriptions for GLP-1 and GIP medications—including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound—at Rite Aid pharmacies in New Hampshire.

As previously shared, Rite Aid is no longer able to fill prescriptions for these medications. Since this change, we’ve received numerous notifications of rejected refills from Rite Aid for patients who rely on these important treatments.

To avoid any interruption in your care, we have automatically transferred your prescription to Walmart, which currently has the capacity to fill these medications.

Please note: Walmart may require that you transfer all of your prescriptions to them in order for them to continue filling Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound, as they do not typically fill these medications in isolation.

If you do not want your prescription filled at Walmart, or would like it sent to a different pharmacy, please message us through the patient portal as soon as possible, and we will update your records accordingly.

Thank you for your attention and for allowing us to support your ongoing treatment.

Warm regards,
Keady Family Practice / KFP Team]
