"Conservation rooted only in usefulness will always be shallow. Real care begins when we stop asking what does it do for me? And start asking what does it mean to simply live?"

“But what do they do for me? What benefit do they have? What’s their purpose?”

I hear these questions a lot when I introduce people to insects like oak treehoppers—those small bugs who engage in remarkable maternal care, caring for and protecting their young with a tenderness we often don’t associate with insects.

These are fair questions—but also revealing ones.

We’re conditioned to evaluate life through the lens of human usefulness. Does it pollinate? Does it feed birds? Does it help my garden? And if the answer is no, we struggle to see its value.

But oak treehoppers don’t need to justify their existence by serving us. Their value doesn’t hinge on utility. They are beautiful and they are complex. That’s enough.

Conservation rooted only in usefulness will always be shallow. Real care begins when we stop asking what does it do for me? And start asking what does it mean to simply let it live.
