Help for Healing

Help for Healing My name is Darcy Thiel. What people say they appreciate most about me is my genuine nature. I’m Darcy Thiel. This dovetails with the books I have written.

I utilize my professional and personal experiences to increase my understanding and compassion to help others. My career has many faces, so let me tell you about a few. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in NY State and am a couple and family therapist. As an Adult Planning Specialist and End of Life Doula, I take my experiences with my parents’ and husband's illnesses and passing to help others navigate the crazy, complicated medical world we live in. Bitter and Sweet: A Family’s Journey with Cancer, the prequel to Life After Death, on This Side of Heaven is an honest and raw perspective on coping with the diagnosis and subsequent loss of Tim, my spouse. I have done extensive speaking on the above topics through live audiences, radio shows, and an occasional TV spot. For more information, see my websites at www.marriageandfamilycounseling.net, www.babycooppublishing.com, or www.darcythiel.com.

The Waldorf school. What a joy this morning was! We went to The Creative Education Foundation, a Waldorf school founded by Judi Palmer who is from Australia. For anyone who is not familiar with Waldorf, it is similar to Montesouri which is an alternative learning program. Hands-on, experiental learning. These schools exist in America, but the idea never quite caught on....

More random stuff. South Africa comprises blacks, whites, and coloreds. I noticed here in Zanzibar, there seem to be no white locals. The laws have changed a bit here and there, but you used to have to be Tanzanian (black) in order to own land. That, or be connected to someone who is. The bigger city areas (like Stone Town) are definitely becoming more diversified with Arabs, Indians, and a smattering of everyone else....

Stone Town Stone Town feels to me like the hub of Zanzibar. It's much busier and active than anywhere else I have been. We had a walking tour with Isaac. The first thing that caught my eye was the cats. They were everywhere. I mean, I've never seen so many cats in one place. Apparently, dogs are considered unclean in the Muslim culture....

Prison Island. We took a trip to Prison Island. It was a short but fun boat ride to get there. There are many boats in Zanzibar, and you can always see men working on their nets or out in the boats. Women are also often out in the water, mostly looking for octopus. However, our boat was a small but fast motorboat....

Zanzibar is known for its spices. I was able to tour a spice farm. The girls I went with were very well versed in spice talk but I'm the one who doesn't even cook, much less like spicy foods. I will tell you what I know first. These are obviously bananas. The one food I could actually identify LOL. What you might not know about bananas, is that Tanzania has 17 different kinds!...

One of the highlights of my trip. One night, Kym brought us directly across the road from our villa to distribute food to the village. We had bread, fresh fruit, juice boxes, cookies, and suckers. It was such a blast. Seeing the village itself was great, much less getting to offer treats. I tried to find the outliers who stood by their houses....

Accommodations. The places I have stayed have been quite lovely. They have all been close to water, which is my happy place. Sunrises and sunsets have been beautiful! This place in Singida had several children using the pool. I’m not sure why they were there. Despite being warned that women are not always welcome, these guys were waving at me from the balcony, so I went down to see them....

Random thoughts… It was suggested to me that I soak in the experiences without comparing them to other countries. I politely declined. I think comparing is how my brain works. It’s not about rating, but about seeing similarities or differences. I forget sometimes that Africa is a continent, not a country. So drawing comparisons would be like the differences between California and Idaho and Florida....

Mr. Dewjie's camps are nothing short of amazing. They started out as eye camps. I heard Mr. Dewjie talking about the impact of a person's livelihood if they lost their eyesight. Investing in eye health is not only obviously good for the person, but it is good for the overall economic health of society. Cities reach out to MDF (Mohammed Dewji Foundation) when they have a need....

We went to Singida to a medical eye camp. I didn’t fully realize it, but today was a really, really big day. Kym’s staff has been working for a better part of a year to make today happen. Mr. Mohammed Dewjie and Kym were able to meet in person. Mr. Dewjie is a former Tanzanian politician. He has been called an amazing man by everyone I have talked to....

Thank God for Veronica traveling with me. This is her third trip here. We arrived at the airport in Zanzibar, and it seemed a bit chaotic to me. Lots of people are waiting in customs without much of a line structure. Veronica knew to ask for some help for a small "fee". It was worth every penny because a gentleman walked with us from post to post, and we were through all the lines in about 15 minutes....

I'm off to a new adventure. I'm traveling with The Kym Rapier Foundation. (Formerly known as Kym's Angels, who you may remember from my last trip to South Africa.) Cannot possibly articulate how grateful I am for the opportunity to experience something new. Ya never know what is going to happen exactly, but this trip is more like that than any previous journey I've been on....
