SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)

In the United States the rate of people affected with SAD can reach almost 10%. The rate is associated with the amount of sun exposure. The more sun exposure the lower the rate. The winter blues is a milder form of SAD and can affect up to 40% of the population in low sun exposure areas. In the fall and winter a few simple tricks may help. First, lift the shades in your home to get maximum light starting from first light. Second, minimize the usage of sunglasses whenever possible. Third, seek the sun especially around noon when the most light is available. If you do not get any relief medical therapy may be needed.

HOLIDAY POUNDS

A large study has confirmed what most of us already know. Americans gain the most weight starting in early November and peak just after the New Year. There are 2 main weight gain spikes during the holiday season. The first is end of November (Thanksgiving) and the 2nd is the end of December (Christmas/New Year). On average it takes about 5 months to drop the extra pounds. Staying extra vigilant during the end of the year could go a long way to keeping weight loss off your “New Year’s Resolution” list.
