Day Five - Closing Thoughts 👍

As I age, feeling strong is the best. Also sleep. Give me an early bedtime and an unrushed morning any day.

I definitely can't do some movements I used to do a decade ago, but I'm so much more aware of what I *can* do, and making sure I can move 'n groove as long as possible. I see some people in class, well into their seventies, and think "I want to be that THAT." The people who show up to class over and over again are inspiring.

If you've followed these posts until today, go get some pizza and Happy Friday. :) 🍕 hope to see you in the studio or somewhere in NEPA soon!

Day Four - Going for "It" (whatever it is!)

Alrighty. Vulnerability time. Making art for a living means you're going to receive a lot of rejections.

Whether it's grants, writing submissions, dance residencies, job applications, or anything in between, art is both wonderful and ridiculously competitive. In spite of years of training and experience, all artists receive healthy doses of rejection. Scarcity is normal. The lifelong goal is never taking a rejection personally (although some days are easier than others!). Social media makes established artists look constantly successful, which (I can assure you) is a load of BS. Even the artists who have done amazing work and receive great opps also get their share of "I'm sorry, but someone else was selected" emails. It's a part of art-making and life. To avoid burnout, artists need to constantly re-assess what's working, and what they need to shift in order to continue.

And....community! I always feel revived if I'm spending time with loved ones or getting outside. Here's some of my favorite local places and people. What do you do, and where do you go, to boost your mood? 🌳🌲🌴🌳🌲🍁

Day Three - TEACHING 🍎🍏🍎🍏

No matter what class, age, or experience level, I place belonging and choice at the center.

I've taught in a lot of different settings, and this always remains true: community is integral.

People need to feel supported and welcomed before they can take risks. I value offering options throughout a class and always let folks know they can take a break and move at their own pace. A sense of humor and willingness to try is integral, as well as prioritizing injury prevention and listening to 'where-you're-at' today -  not last week, not one month from now. Today! This hour! This moment.

My teaching style was molded by Ohm Grown Yoga's trauma-informed training (shout out to Alyssa Pflug and her incredible studio in New Jersey). Their 200-hr YTT program shaped my teaching style, a place where anybody and every-kind-of-body is welcome. I often say 'you know your body better than anyone, so trust it.' I also bake in time each class to thank yourself for coming at all (no matter how your day is going). Showing up in any class is worth celebrating. You didn't have to come, but you did, and your body---->your quality of life------>your loved ones' time with you changes. It's all connected.

Day TWO - Dance & Choreography ✨✨✨

I've always loved moving. Ever since I was little, I 'made up' dances all the time (which I later learned was a job!). I danced at Ballet Theatre of Scranton in HS; I didn't think I could dance for a living until I was an undergrad at Ithaca College, and my professors encouraged me to choreograph. I didn't want to stop studying dance, so I got an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Choreography and Performance from Temple University in Philly. Those years opened my eyes to all of the possibilities of producing shows, teaching in Higher Education, and starting a dance company in New York.

Making dances is like stepping into an empty room and throwing ideas at a wall. You wait to see what sticks, then organize it into something new. I love collaborating with other artists, such as singers and costume designers, and most of the dances I make are influenced by politics and social activism.

Here's some throwbacks from the dances I've made over the years! Been so lucky to have met many people from around the world in the studio and stage. It's an always-adventure. 🎶🎵🎶

Currently I'm dancing with fellow Mission Teacher Jessica Wentlent! We collaborate on ; there's a ton of historic places to see and explore around the city. 🌇🌆🌃

If you've read this far, I hope you put on your favorite song and dance a little bit today. ❤️

Day One - Intro 🌷

Hello Mission movers! If we've not met before, my name is Megan, and it's a pleasure to jump into the Instagram takeover this week.

A little about me: I grew up in Dunmore (go Bucks!) and moved away from the area when I was 18 to pursue a performing arts career. Fast forward two decades, and I've been a lot of things: dancer, professor, choreographer, writer, and a million little gig jobs to be a working artist in New York and PA. I moved back to Scranton two years ago with my kiddo and husband. It felt like a big exhale to boomerang back to small town life. I love teaching at Mission and getting to know so many people from NEPA!

Some of my favorite things: hiking, coffee, books, dance, music, weightlifting, dark chocolate, writing, libraries, birdwatching, rainy Sundays, traveling, laughing so much with friends my stomach hurts, unhurried cooking, big oofy dogs, and horror movies!

This week I'll be sharing more about my teaching values, how dance and creativity influences my classes, and future dreams.

Excited to share more this week! Stay tuned.

Learn the basics of Reformer Pilates with a group of fellow beginners at Mission Pilates !

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact workout that will help you feel strong and achieve your goals. Not only does it help create toned, lean bodies, but it also addresses muscle weakness, improves posture and balance, increases flexibility, improves core strength, and reduces tension.

Fluid movements linked to breath encourage a mind-body connection for optimal body function. Reformers use springs and pull straps that allow the experience to be tailored to the individual, making it suitable for all fitness levels.

Cost: $30

Please preregister to save your spot (link in bio)

Reformer Cancellation policy:
Due to the limited slots in each class, 12 hours cancellation notice is required.

All reservations/cancellations must be made online on our mindbody schedule found on our site, www.mission-yoga.com, or through the app.

If class is ‘late canceled” the class pass/fee will be deducted from the clients account.

Day #5 - I’ve reached the age where I’m a homebody. I love my home. Although my travel days are over for now, traveling was a huge part of my life since I was kid.

My parents brought us all over the world and encouraged us to travel. It’s shaped who I am in such a positive way.

Here are a few pics of my travels:
1: my first trip ever. 1988 • Hawaii
2. 1999 • Ephesus, Turkey
