Recently, Director Shafer, Indiana Fire & Public Safety Academy, reminded the IFCA Board that Indiana Fire Departments are required to document mental health training. Please see the message below with the reporting link.

According to Indiana Code 36-8-10.5-7(f), the mental health training may be completed online or by other virtual instruction, but it must address the mental health and wellness of firefighters, including:

• Healthy coping skills to preserve the mental health of firefighters and to manage the stress and trauma related to employment as a firefighter;

Recognition of:
• Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder; and
• Signs of suicidal behavior; and
• Information on mental health resources available for firefighters.
Indiana fire chiefs or their designee should complete the form below to certify their department's fulfillment of the mental health training requirement.
