The carpentry class at Coahoma Community College, led by instructor Mr. Carlos Pelaez, has partnered with Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center (NWMRMC) to enhance the appearance of the hospital while giving students valuable hands-on experience. Through this collaboration, students are able to apply their skills to real-world projects that directly benefit the community.

This partnership not only strengthens the connection between education and workforce development, but also highlights the importance of investing in local talent. By working on meaningful improvements at the hospital, students gain practical knowledge while contributing to a facility that serves their own community.

“We are thankful for the community partnership with our local college,” said Sylvester Thornton, COO of NWMRMC. “This collaboration allows us to improve our facility while supporting the growth and development of future professionals.”

LaShona Mims, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, recently had the honor of speaking with students at a residence hall on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University. She shared an important message about prioritizing mental health as a key part of achieving both academic and career success. Encouraging open conversations, she reminded students that it’s okay to not be okay—and that seeking help from a professional is a strong and positive step forward.

Ms. Mims is currently accepting new patients at NWMRMC OPT Clinic - Behavioral Health (785 Ohio Avenue, Suite 1F) and NWMRMC Woman’s Clinic (2000 N State Street, Suite A) in Clarksdale, MS. To schedule an appointment, call 662-627-2509. Telehealth services are also available.
