Mosaic Health Center

Mosaic Health Center Since 2015, we have served nearly 6.000 people with compassionate, high-quality care. CCHC was cofounded in February 2015 by Saeed Raees and Dr. Gulshan Harjee.

Mosaic Health Center provides uninsured individuals a place where they can receive the compassionate, high-quality
care that every human deserves including women's health, vision, dermatology, mental health, ultrasound imaging, and cardiology. The Clarkston Community Health Center is a charitable health clinic for uninsured individuals, providing primary and specialty medical services, vision, and women's healthcare. They founded the clinic after witnessing first-hand the undeniable prevalence of underinsured and uninsured residents in the Clarkston area. With this in mind, they set out to create a charitable clinic that would make quality healthcare available to those who would normally not be able to afford it.

Last month, Mosaic had to opportunity to host gubernatorial candidate Geoff Duncan for an afternoon to learn more about the challenges our community faces accessing healthcare. Mr. Duncan and his team met with our staff and patients, hearing the impact being uninsured has to both the individual and the system. Mosaic witnesses firsthand the impacts of healthcare policy, and it was an honor to share more on behalf of our community.

If you've been to Mosaic Health Center, you've most likely encountered our team member, Maha - and her smile and upbeat attitude. Her story is the story of the American Dream. By providing loving care to our patients, Maha is helping to bring healthcare, and our nation, back to our roots as a compassionate, diverse community that invests in each other for the sake of all. We are thrilled to share this profile of Maha that was published in Healthbeat Atlanta.

🎀 🎀 🎀 This October, we recognize our patients and those in the community who have bravely fought breast cancer. Cancer doesn't just happen to those with health insurance, but impacts those without it in equal measure-- and sometimes with worse outcomes because it is not caught in time.

Through Mosaic Health Center's primary and preventive care and partnerships, we are able to provide uninsured patients access to free mammograms. In some cases, where cancer is present, we're able to help them access the treatment and support they need.

In Georgia today there are 1.2M without health insurance – the 2nd highest rate in the nation. And with the recent passage of H.R. 1, current estimates suggest that an additional 750,000 people will lose their health insurance in the years ahead in our state. We must make sure these individuals have access to critical healthcare like mammograms.

Each one of these individuals has a story to tell, and this series – Humans of Clarkston – presents real stories of our patients. Today's story is that of a women who has fought breast cancer.

If you want to help more women in our community like her access mammograms and treatment, please donate today. We cannot do this without your support.

🎀 What is your name?🎀 Jiyan Mukri (name has been changed for the purpose of this story to keep the patient anonymous).

🎀What is your story?🎀 I’m Kurdish, from Iraq. Now, I live in Loganville. Before in 1988, the regime put chemical gasses in my state and killed 7,000 people. We went to Iran, and then went to Pakistan. We lived there for 15 years, and after that the UN moved us to Atlanta. I’ve been gone 38 years, and only saw my family twice.

🎀How did you find out about MHC?🎀 I have diabetes and thyroid issues. I’ve been seeing doctors, but one day I have no insurance. I asked my friend if she knew of anything, and she said, “Why don’t you go to MHC?”

When I came, I saw Dr. Gulshan Harjee. She said, “You need to go take a mammogram.” I just wanted my medication for thyroid and diabetes. She pushed me— she said, “You have to go. It's been a long time.” The results came and they say, “We see something in your test. We need you to do another test.”

They give me another mammogram. And they saw something, so we did an ultrasound and an MRI. They told me they found cancer— it’s new and that we need to take care of it. I was so sad, but Dr. Harjee said, “No worry, I had the same problem, and we can take care of it.”

I have no one here. And, I have a younger son. I was so worried because my family abandoned us when he was 7-years-old, and now he is 19. I am so worried for him and want to tell him to handle life, how to pay bills. I was so sad, I was crying. He said, “Please Mom, stop worrying. You’re gonna be fine. Don’t worry about me— you worry about you.”

When I think about this, it’s very hard. Thank God nothing has happen like that. I had a chance and they took out all the cancer.

🎀What has MHC meant to you?🎀 My life, Dr. Harjee gave it back to me. I was just going to take the medication— and if she had not told me, I would haven’t had the mammogram. She saved my life literally. I don’t know how to appreciate them. I’m happy with these people, and I want to go back to these people.

I have one cancer medication I have to take for 5 years. Now, I have three medications important for life. MHC has been helpful— you usually go to the other doctor you have to pay $100 and medication is more and you have to pay for every test. And at MHC, all the medications are free and my returning visits are $30. That is nothing for all the tests to save the life really. I’m so thankful for that.

With the recent passage of H.R. 1, the restricted access to healthcare will affect us all. Just because a person does not have health insurance and cannot afford to see a doctor, this does not mean they will not get sick, or that they will not need medications. Someone must care for those who do not have health insurance - otherwise we all suffer. Which is where Mosaic Health Center comes in as the only full-time clinic in the area that is 100% devoted to serving the uninsured.

The Association of Physicians of Pakistani Origin of North America hosted its annual health fair earlier this month, and MHC was there in support! Approximately 200 patients were screened for blood sugar, lipid analysis, and HgAic (a test that diagnosis Diabetes Mellitus), as well as received consultations with primary care doctors and specialists, flu shots, and dental and eye exams. Patients that were uninsured were referred to our clinic. Dr. Gulshan HarjeeHarjee was in attendance, as well as several of our volunteers like Dr. Yaseen Abubaker and Dr. Shirazi. We thank GA APPNA Event Page and for hosting our free pharmacy from the start.

MHC was awarded last month by Congressman Hank Johnson at his Ceremony of HOPE Awards. The awards, standing for "Helping Other People Elevate," are meant to uplift the critical work of community-based organizations. We were honored to be included along with other organizations that impact our community daily.

We are thrilled to share that our first-ever Clinical Director, Dr. Karlyn Tunnell, started at Mosaic Health Center last month. Dr. Tunnell comes to us with a passion for community health and expanding access to primary care, and we are excited she has joined the team to help us continue to expand and strengthen our services for the community.

Her role at Mosaic will be to provide leadership to our team, improve the quality of our care, and serve patients. She will help us think through feasible ways to continue improving access to care - thinking about creative ways to deliver in-home and in-community care, bringing online a patient portal to improve communication with our patients, and leading the team to provide culturally humble and compassionate care. Dr. Tunnell, in short, will serve Mosaic in the long tradition of having a local community doctor that knows and serves those in need.

Our Story

The Clarkston Community Health Center (CCHC) was co-founded in 2015 by Dr. Saeed Raees and Dr. Gulshan Harjee. They founded the clinic after witnessing first-hand the undeniable prevalence of underinsured and uninsured individuals among the Clarkston residents. With this in mind, they set out to create a non-profit clinic that would provide quality healthcare for residents of the city and its neighboring counties.

CCHC is one-hundred percent volunteer-led and is a proud partner of the Georgia Volunteer Health Care Program (GVHCP) of the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). With the help of the dedicated volunteers, CCHC expanded from providing solely primary medical care to include dental care, women's healthcare, vision care, and mental healthcare. Our expansion has been made possible by the overwhelming number of volunteers that help us continue to grow along with our strong community partnerships.
