Mary Bell Mason Townes completed her earthly assignment and was awarded her wings on Saturday, July 19, 2025 with her family by her side. She was born February 1, 1936 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to the late Andrew Lee and Jennie Ivy Mason. Mary was preceded in death by her sisters, Ida Carter, Dolly Bryant, Daisy Pettus, Dorothy Green, Geneva Ho**er, Edith Brooks; brothers, Lewis Terry, Frank Mason and Edward Mason.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Reverend Sampson L. Townes, Sr., of 74 years; seven children; sons, Doctor Junior Townes, Sampson L. Townes (Audrey), Stanley L. Townes; daughters, Mary Lee Townes, Martha Ann Townes, Charlene T. Harper (Calvin) and Barbara T. Jefferson (Wayne); seven grandsons, Isaiah M. Coleman, Sampson L. Townes, III, Jayson Pender, James C. Jefferson (Keshelle); granddaughters, Sharita M. Harper, Danielle M. Townes, Taylor J. Cason (Devan); sister, Alice Bibbs; one brother, Earl Mason (Ruby); a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mary accepted Jesus Christ into her life at an early age and was a longstanding member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church. She began her education in the Mecklenburg County School System and attended Finchley Elementary School. Mary was a homemaker and housewife for most of her life and concentrated her time on her favorite passions, her children, grandchildren, flowers and gardening.

Mary truly loved her family. She had a heart of gold and was always putting the needs of others before her own. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025 at the Carter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Clarksville, Virginia. The family will receive friends at 11:00AM and service will begin at 12 Noon. Burial will follow at the St. John African American Episcopal Church, Wilkerson Road and Puryear Store Road, Finchley, Virginia.

Pastor Ronald Thornhill of the Tabernacle of Zion Church of Lawrenceville, Virginia will deliver the eulogy.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Mrs. Sarah Mosley Johnson, affectionately known as “Sadie,” transitioned peacefully from her home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

She was born on June 4, 1920, in Charlotte County, Virginia, to the late Morton Thomas andAlease Brooks Mosley. She was the granddaughter of the late Rev. Jordan Mosley of Salem Baptist Church in Red Oak, VA.

Sarah received her education in the Charlotte County school system. A lifelong learner, she went on to teach herself many skills, driven by determination, and a love of learning.

A devoted homemaker, she also worked as an In-Home Nanny and faithfully served the Morgan family for over 20 years. Later in life, she opened her heart and home to care for children through her own "Mommy Daycare," continuing to nurture young lives well into her later years.

A woman of faith, Sarah was a missionary at Salem Baptist Church in Red Oak, VA, where she served faithfully until her health declined. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life by gardening, cooking, canning, embroidery, and quilting. She also loved reading, playing checkers, dominoes, and bingo, often surrounded by family and friends.

In 1949, Sarah married Paul C. Johnson, Sr. (deceased), and to this union, three children were born: Patricia J. Evans (Carl) of Burlington, NC, Paul C. Johnson, Jr., of the home, and Baby Johnson, who preceded her in death. She leaves behind a legacy of love, including twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great grandchildren. Sarah was preceded in death by her siblings: Ilean Bates, Florence Lee, Ola Mae Carden, Annie Blanche Mosley, Eldridge “Uncle Poke” Mosley, and Eva Wilson. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sudy Mosley (Eldridge), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members who will continue to cherish her memory.

Visitation for Mrs. Sarah Mosley Johnson will be held at Carter's Funeral Home, 206 Virginia Avenue, Clarksville, VA on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 2:30 PM.

Funeral service for Mrs. Sarah Mosley Johnson will be at Carter's Funeral Home, 206 Virginia Avenue, Clarksville, VA on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 3:00 PM in the chapel. Burial will be private following the service.

Lillie T. Pettus was born on October 4, 1946, to the late Daisy G. Britton and Archie James Thomas. She went home to be with the Lord on June 25, 2025, after a long-fought illness.

She was educated in Mecklenburg County, Virginia schools and attended West End High School where she graduated in 1966 and married Harry W. Marrow Jr. and to this union two children were born, Yulando S. Marrow and MiChelle D. Marrow. Lillie was a member of the New Liberty Baptist Church of Finchley, VA, where she served as the church clerk for 2 years and remained a faithful member until her health started to decline and even then she dialed in for church service. She would be the first to tell you she did not go to church every Sunday, but she did go and loved God.

She was one of the first African Americans to work in retail in Chase City, VA. She also worked at Burlington Industries in Clarksville, VA and South Hill, VA. Shealso was a licensed insurance agent for Huff Cook insurance many years. She later went to school in Philadelphia, PA for cosmetology where she graduated and was licensed. She also went to school for nursing, took a Phlebotomy class, and became a Certified Nursing Assistant.

At her time of death, she had retired from nursing. She loved taking care of the sick and less fortunate. She thought everyone needed to be taken care of.

She was preceded in death by her late husband Jerry Pettus. Three brothers James “Jimmy” Thomas, John “Ed” Johnson, and Ernest “Sly” Thomas and four sisters Daisy Hargrove, Mary Louise Jackson, Geraldine Prophet, and Virginia Bates.

She leaves to cherish her memories and live on through two children, devoted daughter, MiChelle (Niecy) Marrow of Highland Springs, VA, and son Yulando (Landy) Marrow (Tracey) of Clarksville, VA. She had four grandchildren Damione R. Marrow, Franki D. Marrow, Ashley Tingen and Patrick Tingen and four great grandchildren KhaMaria Lee, Dameari Marrow, Lyric and Dameiyon Marrow. One sister Rosa Boyce (Rick) of Richmond, VA. She had several devoted friends whom she talked to often and loved dearly, childhood sister- friend Betty Hayes Coates, Gloria (Cookie) Townsend, Margretta Wilson, Estelle Venable, and Jean Mosley who preceded her in death and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

There will be a Walk Through on Friday, July 4, 2025 from 3:00PM-5:00PM. Funeral Service for Mrs. Lillie Thomas Pettus will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at the New Liberty Baptist Church at 12 Noon. Spencer Dion Mosley Sr., of Red Oak, Virginia, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and quiet passion for the simple joys of life. Born to Daniel and Luvern Mosley in South Boston, Spencer was a devoted son, a caring father, and a loyal friend to many.

Spencer was preceded in death by his beloved aunt, Fannie Carrington, whose influence and love
remained with him throughout his life.

In addition to his mother, Luvern Davis and father, Daniel Mosley (Maryann), he is survived by his five children: Spencer Mosley Jr. of Meherrin, VA; Michael Jones (Tiffany) of Keysville, VA; Muneerah Hall of Clarksville, VA; Shaleshia Richardson (George) of Wake Forest, NC; and Iyisa Smith of Norfolk, VA. He was also a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, each of whom brought him great joy and pride. He also leaves behind four sisters: Janet Feggins, Daneko Wilson (Paul), Debbie Reynolds, Tracy Montoya (Raul), and one brother: Donnell Mosley (Carolyn), and a host of nieces and nephews.

Spencer had a deep appreciation for nature and personal wellness. He found peace and
excitement in kayaking and fishing, and he was passionate about bodybuilding, a discipline that
reflected his inner strength and determination.
Professionally, Spencer found fulfillment working for Securitas at Microsoft in Boydton, VA, where he built lasting relationships with his coworkers and took great pride in his work. His dedication and positive spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him there.

Spencer Dion Mosley Sr. will be remembered for his steady presence, his love for his family,
and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Cynthia Delois Tucker, 59 of Brodnax, VA entered into eternal rest on May 23, 2025 at her residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Cynthia better known by her family and friends as “Cim” was born is South Boston, Virginia on July 5, 1965 to the late Daniel Sterling and Mae Alice Tucker. She graduated from Bluestone High School in Skipwith, Virginia in 1983 and went on to serve in the U.S.Army.
She enjoyed driving and spending time with her granddaughters. She worked for Logan’s Transportation until her health no longer allowed her to continue.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Shante Micheleel Tucker and brother, Minister Thomas Lawrence.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her children, Darrell Tucker (Cindy), Jovan Terry, Ebbonee Terry, Essence Terry, Patrice Smith, Tyeisha Alserson (Gwanye), Subrina Smith, Tiffany Greene, Tricia Robinson (Terry), Lamar Pulliam (Angie), Marius Henderson; grandchildren, Ivaeh Johnson, Ava Tucker; siblings, Patricia (Farrell), Charles Tucker, Robbie (Curtis), Otis (Arlene), Kelly (Ricardo); adopted brother, Ronnie Coley; special friends, Wanda Tipton, Alice Pritchett, MariaAlmada, Dorothy Greene; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mr. Robert Lee Alexander, affectionally known as "Reed," was called to transition on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born on September 28, 1932, to the late Rose and George Alexander of Skipwith, VA. He was employed by Huss Inc. for 48 years where he was a truck driver, night watchman and ran a low boy when the trucks would break down. Prior to his health decline, he was passionate about cutting his hedges, fishing, and buying things. He never saw a for sale sign that he did not like. He was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Skipwith, VA. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his life-time companion Sarah Toombs and adopted son Alvin Toombs. He leaves to cherish in his memory one son, Robert "Pooney" Toombs (Mary) of Chase City, VA; one brother Grover Alexander (Christine) of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Tenesha Shelton, Tiffanny Jones, Ronnie Oliver and AJ Toombs; five great-grandchildren Ta'Kaya, Jaziah, Ta' Naya, Micah and Cartier; one great-great grandchild Nova; one niece Celeste Alexander (Butch); a host of other relatives and friends.

Clem Roosevelt Oliver (Roland), departed this life at the age of 84. He was born to the late Richard Junious and Willie Frances Oliver.
He graduated from West End High School, class of 1961. He retired from Burlington Industries. He later worked for Carter’s Funeral Home and at Mecklenburg County Public School System. Clem had a very strong work ethic and farmed for many years. Prior to the decline in his health, he was passionate about his yard. No one could cut his grass the
way he liked. Clem was a well-respected member of the community.

He was a long time faithful member of New
Liberty Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir.
In 1963, he married the love of his life, Lucille Veronica Harris. To this union they were blessed with three daughters.
In addition to his parents, Clem was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille of forty-nine years; two brothers, Lorenzo and Dalton Oliver; one sister, Linda Holley.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Willie Harriet Wilkerson “Goldie” (Tim) of Chesapeake, VA; Pamela Rose Oliver of Clarksville, VA and Veronica Oliver Baskerville (Floyd) of Clarksville, VA; one sister, Roxie Oliver Holder of Portsmouth, VA; four grandchildren, Terri, Brandon (Lauren), Jasmine, Forest; one great-grandson, Caleb; nephews, John, Darrell; a niece, Marian; a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Danny Merle Smith, 62 of Mecklenburg County, Virginia was called to transition on Sunday, March 9, 2025. He was born on August 30, 1962 to the late Emily Davis Smith and Benjamin Smith and preceded in death by brothers, Prince Edward Smith and Mitchell Smith and his sister Mable Smith.
He was part of the Mecklenburg County Schools System and graduated from Old Dominion Job Core in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Cordell Elizabeth “Jackie” (Forskin) Martin was the eldest of seven children from the union of the late Soloman E. Forskin and Louise I. (Smart) Forskin. She was born on October 29, 1936, in Kingston, Jamaica, WI, and parted this life on February 21, 2025, at her
home in Atlanta, GA, surrounded by family.

She was educated in Jamaica and entered the banking world early as a bank teller at Scotia Bank and quickly advanced to working as a head bank teller at the Regional office.

In 1968, she briefly moved to the United Kingdom. However, she only stayed for a few months, as she did not like the cold, damp weather. She took the final voyage of Queen Elizabeth I to New York. During her visit to New York, her childhood friend from the age of seven, Lorna Whittier, helped her to start the immigration process to the United States.

She eventually went back into banking, working for Chemical Bank.
Jackie met William “Bill”Martin in 1972 and married in 1974. From that union, a daughter, Nicole, was born. She brought a son to the marriage from a previous relationship, Michael A Penso. Jackie, Bill, and Nicole made their home in Queens, New York, and in 1986, relocated to Littlestown, Pennsylvania, to a small fruit farm to pursue Bill’s dream of having a farm. They spent 20 years together on the farm and enjoyed gardening and growing Asian Pears.

In 2006, Jackie and Nicole relocated to Atlanta, GA, after her husband Bill passed away. Jackie was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, coloring on her iPad, and keeping track of how often she beat the computer playing video games. She
also enjoyed spending quality time with her daughter and her granddog, Kirah.

She became the matriarch of the Forskin family at an early age and, over the years, helped sponsor several family members to become citizens of the United States. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reminiscing on special moments with them, and watching her great-nephews excel in basketball.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter Nicole H. Martin, her son Michael A. Penso (Patricia), her sister Lillian V. Dineley, her brother Ralph W. Forskin (Margaret), her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Forskin, Gloria Forbes-Forskin, Mozelle Braithwaite
(Jorge) and Alice Jones, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Willam H. Martin Sr, brothers Lauron Forskin and Winston Forskin, and sisters Pauline Connett and Celia Cardoza.

There will be a visitation on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Carter's Funeral Home; 206 Virginia Avenue, Clarksville, VA 23927, from 2pm-6pm and there will be a Graveside Service on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church #2, 212 Church Road, Clarksville, VA 23927

Lynn Stanley Oliver was born to the late Junious and Anna Liza Moody Oliver on May 9, 1953, in Richmond, Virginia. On March 4, 2025, Lynn was called to his heavenly home by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Lynn was educated at Bluestone High School where he graduated. After graduation, Lynn married his high school sweetheart, Floyzell Jones. They were joined as one for 37 years before her passing. He was employed at Burlington Industries before he found his true calling in corrections. Lynn retired from the Department of Corrections. Lynn wanted to do more in life after retirement and he found a new passion in owning and operating Michelle’s Home Cooking Café. He worked tirelessly to make the restaurant a success. During his time at Michelle’s Café, he gained many friendships with others. Lynn loved to collect cars. He was a member of the New Birth Car Club.

Lynn leaves to cherish his memories; one son, Bryant Oliver; one daughter, LaWanda (Steve) McKinnies; four grandchildren that he was active and proud of, Kevin Oliver, Surraye McKinnies, Brhyanna McKinnies, Samaria McKinnies; for sisters, Sherdine (Corwin) Burtton, Gracie (Larry) Thompson, Corretta Oliver, Susan Elam; one sister-in-law, Neomi Oliver; two aunts, Louise Moody, Versie Moody; a special friend, Michelle Davis; lifelong friend, Earnest Burwell, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, in which his love and legacy will live through them. Lynn’s love touched so many.

Mr. Henry Lee Clay, Sr., departed this life at his residence on March 3, 2025. Henry was born on March 11, 1944 to the late, William Henry Clay and Hattie Terry Clay. Henry was a native of Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Henry received his education in the Mecklenburg County Public Schools. He enjoyed fishing and he had a real good hand at being a carpenter. Henry loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed life and laughter.

Henry leaves to cherish his memories to his wife, Margaret Terry Clay; daughters, Lucinda, Freda (Dallas), Mary Linda (Thomas); sons, Shaun (Charlene), Henry, Jr.; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and a host of cousins and friends.
