🔹 Helping Your Child Follow Multi-Step Instructions
Multi-step tasks can be overwhelming, but in ABA therapy, we can break them down into manageable steps for success! Here’s how to help your child tackle tasks that involve more than one step:
Break Down the Task – Instead of saying "Get ready for bed," break it down into smaller steps: "First, put on your pajamas. Then, brush your teeth. Last, turn off the light." This makes the task more manageable.
Use Visual Cues – Visuals like pictures or charts showing each step can help your child understand the process. Having a clear visual guide can make the steps less intimidating.
Give Clear, Simple Instructions – Keep instructions short and clear. ""Put your shoes on"" is much easier to follow than a long explanation. One step at a time!
Reinforce Success – When your child completes a step, give praise or a small reward. Positive reinforcement encourages them to keep going and complete the task.
By breaking tasks into smaller, manageable parts, your child will feel more confident in following through on multi-step instructions. With the right support, they can master these skills one step at a time!
