Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Service Members, Veterans & Families Mental Health Summit!

We were honored to welcome local veterans and military families, community providers, and organizations from across our region for a day focused on connection, education, and support for those who have served.

A special thank you to Commissioner John Maxwell with the Virginia Department of Veteran Services for opening the summit and helping set the tone for a meaningful day of learning and collaboration. We also appreciate our outstanding presenters who shared valuable information on veteran and family support, su***de prevention and safety planning, housing stability, peer support, prevention education, and more.

Throughout the day, attendees connected with local vendors and resources, participated in breakout trainings, and built stronger partnerships to better support Service Members, Veterans, and Families in Southside Virginia.

We’re grateful to everyone who attended, presented, volunteered, and partnered with us to make this event possible. Together, we continue building a stronger network of support for our SMVF community.

On Wednesday, May 20th, Southside Behavioral Health had the pleasure of hosting a CIT Banquet for Law Enforcement CIT graduates and their supervisors, CIT Instructors, and additional staff who help make CIT happen every quarter at Southside Behavioral Health. Each law enforcement agency nominated an officer who exemplifies crisis intervention in their everyday work, there was an officer awarded with a plaque from Sheriff’s Offices and Police Department from all 3 counties, along with hospital security and the Meherrin River Regional Jail. Parenting can be challenging, but support is available.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based program designed for children ages 2–7 that helps strengthen the parent-child relationship while reducing behaviors like tantrums, defiance, aggression, and stress at home.

Through PCIT, families learn positive communication skills, build stronger connections, and create more confident, cooperative interactions together.

Our PCIT program also offers live coaching support during sessions:
Therapists provide real-time guidance through a “bug-in-ear” coaching device.
In Mecklenburg, families can participate in our newly designed PCIT room featuring a two-way mirror for live observation and coaching.

You do not have to already be in therapy services to participate in PCIT.

If you’re concerned about your child’s behavior or looking for extra support, we’re here to help.
