Who doesn’t love a little challenge? Summer is heating up, and with JOAD Outdoor Target Nationals next week, and the week after, I figured now is a good time to talk mindset. It’s not easy to stay calm on the line when you have your sights (see what I did there 😆) set high. Archery demands calm under pressure, performance in challenging situations. You’ve done drills to train your body, now do some drills to train your mind.

Over the next 7 days I will cover some ways you can improve your mindset. And the 7 days begins TODAY.

I have to start with “why”. Why did you get into archery? What led you to pursue archery to the level you are at today? Why do you want to go further?

Changing your mindset to reach the next level in your pursuit…whether it is archery or career or just life…begins by answering the question, “What is My ‘Why’?”

Be sure to check back in tomorrow for day 2.

Can’t wait for each day’s discussion? Then head over to and click the link in the bio to get the 7-Day Mindset Challenge E-Book for free!! The e-book includes prompts to help you make the most of this challenge.

Tell me in the comments what your “why” is. Don’t forget to follow me, like this post, and share it with someone who can benefit from tips on improving their mindset.

This is where everybody who follows me for mental health content is thinking, “Huh?? What’s with this archery stuff??” Allow me to explain…

…yes, I am still a licensed psychologist and founder/owner of Brighter Hope Wellness Center. Yes, I still do speaking engagements and media related to parenting, mental health, and how mental health clinicians can use social media to help more people.

I am also a barebow recurve archer who has multiple state championships with podium finishes on the regional, national, and international level. How did that happen? Story for another day. Today I just wanted to talk briefly about how archery is such a beautiful metaphor for mental health. Actually, it is more than a metaphor. Archery will reveal your mental vulnerabilities while it helps you to increase your mental strength.

Sometimes you work your process and the arrows land where they are supposed to. Other times it feels like you couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. How you handle the highs and the lows of archery are closely tied to your mental health. I have a lot of thoughts, reflections, and bit 😉 of insight about how improving your mental health will improve your mental game. And how improving your mental game is reflected in your mental health.

So from here on out I plan on continuing to talk about parenting and mental health. I’ll also be including posts on my reflections about how archery and mental health coincide.

…maybe I’ll even have something new coming down the road…

Find an activity that you can immerse yourself in. is that for me. It is a sport that requires you to be fully present. Add in beautiful scenery, a challenging course, and great people? 🤌🏿🤌🏿

Had my best performance at a national tournament to date at and US Team Trials for the World Field Championships. Is second alternate an official distinction? No, it is not. But that’s what I’m calling myself nonetheless. 😂

I had the chance to contribute to this HuffPost Parents article on the “parentification” of children and its ramifications in adulthood. This thoughtfully written piece by Kelsey Borresen includes discussion on both the negative and positive implications as well as helpful tips on how to cope as an adult.

Use the link in the comments to read my thoughts on the matter.
