Skin-to-skin is for both parents.
When your baby is placed on bare chest, it helps regulate temperature, breathing, and heart rate.
It is also linked to improved oxygen levels and better transitions during those first hours.
We see the benefits every day, whether it is right after birth or in the days that follow.
Skin-to-skin is simple, practical, and backed by research. We encourage both parents to take part whenever they are able.

Contract Labor/Birth Assistants Needed – Join Our Team!
Please read and follow the directions carefully.

Clarksville Midwifery is currently seeking additional Birth Assistants to support our midwives during births. Birth Assistants play a vital role in ensuring safe, supportive, and efficient care for our clients and their families. Typical responsibilities include assisting with charting, monitoring vital signs, preparing for and supporting in the event of an emergency, and cleaning and restocking after births.

Birth is unpredictable—Birth Assistants should be prepared to be present anywhere from 4 to 24+ hours, though most births average 5–7 hours. To ensure coverage and avoid burnout, we aim to train multiple assistants who can share the on-call schedule.

Minimum Requirements:
-MUST live within 30 minutes of the Clarksville/Oak Grove area, you will not be considered if you live outside of this radus.
-Willingness to be on-call during scheduled 24-hour shifts (7 PM–7 PM) and respond promptly. (MOST births happen in the middle of the night)
-Reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
-Reliable cell phone with good signal
-Reliable childcare (if applicable) during on-call times
-Current Healthcare Provider CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to attending births
-Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification or willingness to obtain before attending births

-Birth or medical experience preferred but not required
Additional required training will be discussed during interviews.

Compensation & Training Structure:

-First birth: Observe only (unpaid)

-Orientation births: $50 per birth

-Orientation concludes once training is complete and both the midwife team and assistant agree on readiness

Fully trained assistants: $300 per birth for home birth. $400 for birth center when opened. This could include 2 people birthing at the birth center at the same time.

Birth Assistants must be open to both home and birth center births. The schedule will be based on availability, not based on location of birth.

Scheduling is based on your availability and is scheduled out a month in advance. 24-hr on-call shifts (7 PM–7 PM). Most natural births happen in the middle of the night.

How to Apply:
If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit the following by email only:
-A one-page cover letter describing:
-Why you are a good candidate
-Any relevant birth or healthcare experience (NOT including your own births)
-Current certifications
-Examples of your general availability
-Your resumé

📧 Send all application materials to: clarksvillemidwifery@gmail.com

📅 Deadline: Friday, December 5th

🖥 Interviews will be conducted via Zoom.

Please do not call or message via Facebook. Only emailed submissions will be accepted.

We encourage you to share this opportunity with others who may be a good fit. We look forward to hearing from you!

Long before hospitals, home was the original birthplace.
For generations, babies were born surrounded by family, community, and skilled attendants who knew how to support physiologic birth.
That tradition continues today.
Homebirth remains an option for healthy pregnancies and allows for care that’s both personal and evidence-based.

Food is fuel, and labor requires energy.
We recommend eating and drinking during labor unless there is a specific reason not to.
Small, familiar foods like fruit, toast, broth, or yogurt can help keep your blood sugar steady and support endurance.
Nourishing your body through labor is part of safe, supportive care.

After your birth, we monitor both you and baby.

Your baby stays with you the whole time, and we come to you when it is time to check vitals or do a newborn exam.

Using the tub during labor can feel amazing, but not everyone wants to stay in for the birth.
That is completely fine.
Sometimes the tub is used during early or active labor and then we move to the bed, the stool, or the floor to push.
The goal is not to stay in one place the whole time.
It is to use the tools available when they make the most sense and change it up when your body tells you to.

Movement makes a difference in labor.

Walking, swaying, changing positions, or even standing during contractions can all help encourage the baby to descend and the cervix to open. Movement supports alignment, circulation, and efficiency. That is why we do not restrict positions or require you to stay in bed. You are encouraged to move in whatever way helps your body keep labor progressing.

The first hour after birth matters.

This is when your baby starts adjusting to life outside the womb. Breathing, temperature, and heart rate begin to regulate. Feeding cues often begin during this time, too.

It gives both of you time to settle in and start the recovery process.

Pregnancy takes a lot out of you. Even if you’re not doing anything extra, your body is still working hard every day.

It’s important to know that rest doesn’t have to be earned. You don’t need to prove you’ve done enough to take a break. If your body’s asking for rest, that’s reason enough.

You can say no. You can take a nap. You can clear your calendar. Slowing down is part of how you take care of yourself right now, and that matters.

Clarksville Birth Center Construction Update

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the Clarksville Birth Center, and we want to share a heartfelt update.

As with many construction projects, we’ve encountered a few unexpected design and mechanical changes that required additional planning, state approvals, and close coordination with our contractors. While these adjustments have caused some delays in our original timeline, they are being made to ensure the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability for our families and team.

We’re so grateful for your continued patience and support as we work through this phase. Every step brings us closer to opening a beautiful, welcoming, licensed, and fully compliant birth center created with our community in mind.

How long will it take to clear the state?
Right now, we simply don’t know. We all expected to be open by this fall, and even the state did not anticipate these new recommendations — especially after reviewing every step along the way.

With the holiday season approaching, progress may slow down as teams take time off to be with family. Our hope is that this won’t affect our timeline too much, but experience has taught us to expect the unexpected. As soon as we have clearer updates, we’ll be sure to share them with you.

Thank you for believing in this vision with us — your encouragement keeps us moving forward! 💛

You can absolutely bring a playlist to your birth.
Music is more than just background noise, it actually helps regulate your breathing, lowers stress hormones, and gives your brain something steady to focus on.
We have seen it all. Country ballads. R&B slow jams. Spa sounds. Taylor Swift. Even a full gospel choir.
There is no right soundtrack.
If it helps you stay grounded and keeps the room feeling calm, it works.
Your body sets the rhythm, and your playlist just follows the beat.

A birth ball is a simple but powerful tool. It supports upright positions, helps release tension in the hips and pelvis, and keeps you mobile even when you are tired. You can use it to sit and sway, lean forward, or combine it with a rebozo for comfort and movement. We use the birth ball throughout labor because it works. It helps your body stay active while letting your muscles rest.
