Each labor follows its own path. Some move steadily from start to finish, while others include long pauses or moments of rest between active phases. Labor is influenced by many factors, including position, hydration, and rest. At Clarksville Midwifery, we understand that every birth has its own rhythm.

Movement can make a real difference in how you experience labor. Shifting positions helps relieve pressure, encourages your baby to rotate and descend, and can often make contractions more productive. You might walk, sway, use a birth ball, or rest on hands and knees. Some positions work better for comfort, others for progress, and both have value.

A special thank you to all those pictured, and not pictured, who were able to show up today and help us get ready for our next state inspection. We drilled! We cleaned! And now we are all exhausted.

Special thank you to the roller derby gals who heard we needed help and showed up without even knowing WHAT a birth center is!!

Skin-to-skin contact after birth plays an important role in the transition from pregnancy to life outside the womb. Placing your baby directly on your chest helps regulate temperature, breathing, and heart rate. It also encourages early feeding and supports healthy bonding. This quiet time gives both parent and baby a chance to rest and adjust together.

The first hour after birth is a time of deep transition. Your baby is adjusting to life outside the body, and your own body is beginning to recover. During this time, we keep the space quiet and unrushed. Your baby is placed on your chest, where skin-to-skin contact supports their temperature, breathing, and early feeding. For you, it is a moment to rest, to shift from labor to parenthood, and to begin connecting face to face. We do not interrupt unless there is a medical need. That first hour belongs to you and your baby.
