GOVS CARE
Once in a five year cycle two campuses nationwide are selected to attempt a culture change challenge and reduce interpersonal violence at college. Last year Austin Peay State University was selected for an award of money and resources to elevate the superhero nature in all of us and promote caring for one another.
As one can imagine, new found freedoms converging with all manner of social anxiety and inexperience make the the traditional 18 to 22 year old facing new and consequential decisions about s*x, drug and alcohol good candidates for community support. Other often unspoken tribulations reside among us like abuse in our relationships, bullying and harassment, s*xual assault and stalking. Depression and isolation are a common challenge.
The GOVS CARE movement is an organizing and consciousness raising effort here on campus funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the next four years. Working with students, staff and faculty from every corner of the community we hope to discover safer places to be together, words that express our fears and our better intentions, traditions that make being a Governor emblematic of being a decent and caring human being.
CARE stands for something, a sort of checklist we hope will inform the people who take part in our learning and living community. We aim to demonstrate that we are people who are Compassionate, Attentive, Responsible and Empowered. We hope each of you, as an individual as well as your clubs and organizations, will join our Caring Coalition and host a GOVS CARE event immediately and often.
