Flu Alert: Rhabdomyolysis Cases Rising

Parents, please be aware that we're seeing a increase in cases of rhabdomyolysis (rhabdo) associated with the flu this season.

Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle cells break down and release their contents into the bloodstream. While flu typically causes muscle aches, rhabdo is a severe complication where extensive muscle damage occurs.

Warning signs include:

· Extreme muscle pain and cramping

· Inability to walk due to pain/weakness

· Tender thigh/calf muscles

· Recent flu diagnosis or symptoms


This condition requires immediate medical attention as it can cause kidney damage, irregular heartbeat, and in severe cases, permanent injury or death.

Best prevention? Avoid the flu through vaccination, handwashing, and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
