Lower Crossed Syndrome (LCS) — Massage Education
Lower Crossed Syndrome is a common postural imbalance where certain muscles become tight and overactive, while others become lengthened and weak. This imbalance often leads to chronic low back pain, hip discomfort, and poor posture.
Common patterns include:
• Tight/overactive: hip flexors (psoas, iliacus), lumbar extensors
• Lengthened/underactive: glutes, deep abdominals
Common symptoms:
• Persistent low back pain or stiffness
• Anterior pelvic tilt
• Hip tightness or pulling sensation
• Fatigue with standing or walking
• Recurrent flare-ups despite rest
How massage therapy helps:
Massage helps reduce tone in overactive muscles, improve tissue mobility, and restore balance within the pelvis and lumbar spine. Therapeutic work often focuses on:
• Hip flexors and quads
• Lumbar paraspinals
• Gluteal muscles
• Fascia surrounding the pelvis and hips
By decreasing tension in shortened tissues, massage allows weakened muscles to re-engage more effectively—especially when paired with corrective exercise and movement awareness.
Important note:
Massage is not a “one-and-done” fix for Lower Crossed Syndrome. Consistent care, postural awareness, and strengthening the glutes and core are key for long-term relief.
If you’re experiencing ongoing low back or hip pain and want a more clinical, targeted approach, therapeutic massage can be a valuable part of your care plan.
