Placenta encapsulation! What is it and why would anyone do it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keeping the placenta and consuming, either raw or dehydrated, is also known as placentophagy and has been around for centuries.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In our modern times we call it placenta encapsulation as most families choose to get their organ dehydrated and turned into small pills, like vitamins, to consume daily after birth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do you encapsulate a placenta?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Placenta is kept after birth and placed on ice or in a fridge until a specialist can retrieve it⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Placenta is then investigated for any abnormalities or meconium, cleaned and processed, then cut and placed into a dehydrator for up to 24 hours⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-If mother is sensitive to caffeine the placenta will be gently boiled before placed into a dehydrator⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Dehydrated placenta is then crushed into a powder and inserted into vitamin size capsules⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Singular placenta birth will produce anywhere from 75-200 placenta pills⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why would you consume your placenta?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Placentas are known to have trace amounts of iron and have shown to improve and elevate mother's iron levels which drop after birth⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Placentas also contain many hormones like progesterone and estrogen which help level mother's hormones while encouraging milk supply⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Placentas contain B vitamins like B6 and B12 which provide many benefits like:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
elevated hemoglobin levels which can help reduce anemia, improved mood helping you through those baby blues, increased energy levels (up with baby all night?)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What evidence is there on placenta consumption?

Awesome! Using the benefits of gravity and partner support!

Reposted from .herbs I love to see gravity in action!

Birth is so often depicted in the position preferred by a pervy misogynistic vo**ur in the French court - King Louis XIV. (He's a disgrace, I will make a separate post about him because I don't want to spoil this gorgeous post of a powerful mama doing her thing.)

Historically though, women have alwaus used all kinds of active and upright positions to give birth.

Reposted from

Lovely example of birth while standing. Have you listened to the latest podcast episode about reducing the risk of vaginal tearing during birth? This is one of the positions that research supports.

Did you tear while giving birth? Which position were you in? Was it the position you wanted to be in?

Repost from

Homebirth in the standing position.

How powerful is this momma? How calm is her partner? Birth can be both calm and powerful.

How was your birth?

Thanks to our client AM for sharing her birth with you. 💙🙌

What is delayed cord clamping? What are the benefits?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸Delayed cord clamping is when the umbilical cord from baby to placenta is not clamped immediately at birth and delayed until blood, stem cells, and nutrients have finished pulsing from placenta to baby⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸When allowed full pulsation the cord will go from spiral, round, blue and purple to flat, thin, and white in appearance, as shown in photo⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to ACOG:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸delayed umbilical cord clamping increases hemoglobin levels at birth and improves iron stores in the first several months of life⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸Delayed umbilical cord clamping is associated with significant neonatal benefits in preterm infants, including improved transitional circulation, better establishment of red blood cell volume, decreased need for blood transfusion, and lower incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis and intraventricular hemorrhage⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸recommendation for delay in umbilical cord clamping in vigorous term and preterm infants for at least 30–60 seconds after birth. We, MDH, recommend until cord changes from blue/purple to white in color⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🩸Delayed umbilical cord clamping does not increase the risk of postpartum hemorrhage⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Delaying the clamping of your baby's cord is so important. This can also be done during a Cesarean birth as well. Just make sure you discuss this with your providers and make known your preference for this.

The placenta. What is it and what does it do?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👶The placenta is an organ that develops with the baby to nourish, oxygenate, and keep the baby alive⠀

🩸The structure of the placenta and the umbilical cord provide oxygen and nutrients to your baby as well as removes waste products from your baby's blood

🧱The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, either top, side, front, or back, in rare cases in attaches in the lower part of the uterus and this is called placenta previa.

What can affect placenta health?⠀⠀

🔸️Maternal age, specifically after 40⠀⠀
🔸️High blood pressure
🔸️Twin or other multiple pregnancy⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔸️Blood clotting disorders⠀⠀
🔸️Previous uterine surgery⠀⠀
🔸️Previous placental problems
🔸️Substance use, like smoking or narcotics⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔸️Abdominal trauma

What are most common placental problems?

🔸️Placental abruption, peeling away of placenta from uterine wall
🔸️Placenta previa, placenta partially or totally covers cervix
🔸️Placenta accreta, part of or all placenta remains firmly attached to uterus
🔸️Retained placenta, if placenta isn't delivered within 30 mins of birth it is considered retained

Signs/Symptoms of placenta problems:

🔸️Vaginal bleeding
🔸️Abdominal pain
🔸️Back pain⠀⠀
🔸️Uterine contractions

What to do to reduce risk of placental problems?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Keep regular check ups with provider during pregnancy⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Work with provider to manage any health conditions, like high blood pressure⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Don't smoke or use drugs⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Talk with provider about potential risks before deciding for an elective Cesarean
