The placenta. What is it and what does it do?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶The placenta is an organ that develops with the baby to nourish, oxygenate, and keep the baby alive⠀
🩸The structure of the placenta and the umbilical cord provide oxygen and nutrients to your baby as well as removes waste products from your baby's blood
🧱The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, either top, side, front, or back, in rare cases in attaches in the lower part of the uterus and this is called placenta previa.
What can affect placenta health?⠀⠀
🔸️Maternal age, specifically after 40⠀⠀
🔸️High blood pressure
🔸️Twin or other multiple pregnancy⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔸️Blood clotting disorders⠀⠀
🔸️Previous uterine surgery⠀⠀
🔸️Previous placental problems
🔸️Substance use, like smoking or narcotics⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔸️Abdominal trauma
What are most common placental problems?
🔸️Placental abruption, peeling away of placenta from uterine wall
🔸️Placenta previa, placenta partially or totally covers cervix
🔸️Placenta accreta, part of or all placenta remains firmly attached to uterus
🔸️Retained placenta, if placenta isn't delivered within 30 mins of birth it is considered retained
Signs/Symptoms of placenta problems:
🔸️Vaginal bleeding
🔸️Abdominal pain
🔸️Back pain⠀⠀
🔸️Uterine contractions
What to do to reduce risk of placental problems?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Keep regular check ups with provider during pregnancy⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Work with provider to manage any health conditions, like high blood pressure⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Don't smoke or use drugs⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔Talk with provider about potential risks before deciding for an elective Cesarean
