Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (PHPT) is a specialized form of therapy designed to address issues related to the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles support vital organs such as the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs, and play a key role in urinary, bowel, and sexual function. PFPT focuses on strengthening, relaxing, and retraining these muscles to restore function and alleviate discomfort.
PFPT is useful for a wide range of conditions, including:
- Urinary Incontinence: Helps manage both stress and urge incontinence by improving bladder control.
- Pelvic Pain: Relieves chronic pain in the pelvic region caused by muscle tightness or dysfunction.
- Postpartum Recovery: Assists in healing after childbirth, addressing issues like prolapse, urinary incontinence, and pelvic pain.
- Prolapse: Aids in strengthening pelvic muscles to support organs that have dropped due to weakened pelvic floor muscles.
- Sexual Dysfunction: Treats pain during in*******se or difficulty with arousal and or**sm, often caused by pelvic muscle dysfunction.
- Prevention and Education: Helps individuals maintain pelvic floor health to prevent future complications, especially during pregnancy, aging, or after surgery.
A licensed pelvic floor physical therapist will use a combination of manual therapy, exercises, biofeedback, and patient education to tailor treatment for individual needs, offering a non-invasive and holistic approach to pelvic health.
