What Beginners Need to Know Before Their First Yoga Class
(Some of these might surprise you!)
1. No one is watching you (except the instructor!)
Many beginners feel self-conscious and try to hide in the back of the room. No worries — most people are focused on their own practice, not on what anyone else is doing. The instructor is simply there to help make sure you’re moving safely and getting the support you need.
2. It’s OK to rest
Actually… it’s more than OK — it’s encouraged!
Whether you’re in a class or practicing at home, this is YOUR practice. Take a more supported option, skip a pose, or rest whenever you need to. Listening to your body is part of yoga.
3. There are many ways to do a pose
The pose you see on Instagram — or even the way the instructor demonstrates it — is just one option. If it doesn’t work for your body, try a variation or use props for support. A good yoga teacher will help you find shapes and movements that work for you.
4. Flexibility is NOT required
Saying you’re “not flexible enough for yoga” is like saying you’re “too dirty to take a bath.” 😂
Yoga can help improve flexibility over time, but it can also support strength, stability, balance, concentration, stress relief, and body awareness.
5. We are all beginners
The longer you practice yoga, the more you realize there are no real “levels.” Every day is different. Every body is different. Every practice is a new opportunity to meet yourself exactly where you are in this moment.
You do not need to be flexible, experienced, calm, fit, or “good at yoga” to begin.
You just need to show up. 🧘♀️✨
