Emotional and physical support during pregnancy, birth, & postpartum to help women make informed decisions about the care they receive both in & out of hospitals. I am Chelsey Hernandez Whitcomb, founder of Doulightful Beginnings Birth Care. As a former teacher, I believe continual education is the cornerstone to our growth as individuals and this was even more true during my pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my daughter in 2016, I saw “Business of Being Born,” which completely changed how I viewed pregnancy and birth and I realized I had so much to learn! From there, I read Ina May Gaskin’s “Guide to Childbirth” and took a Bradley Method birthing class. It was through this decision that I decided to hire a doula to help at my birth. I learned that a doula offers emotional and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and that the doula’s primary role is simply to be there for you, your baby, and your partner during this special time. Studies have shown that women supported by a doula in labor have a 50% reduction in c-section rate, 25% shorter labor, 60% reduction in epidural requests, 40% reduction in Pitocin use, 30% reduction in analgesia use, and 40% reduction in forceps delivery. My doula was there for me during my pregnancy, answering every question I had and helping me to interpret the things my doctor was saying. She reminded me of things to ask my doctor and also provided me with evidence based research to make informed decisions about my birth. During labor, I credit my doula with helping me achieve an unmedicated natural birth. She reminded me of my strength and helped me get mentally back into the hardest part of labor. She didn’t take the place of my baby’s father or the other people in my birthing room. She complemented them and added her expertise and guidance when needed, while also reminding hospital staff of my goals and desires for my birth. She showed me how to breastfeed just after my daughter was born, which I still can’t believe we’ve successfully done for 15 months! My doula was also there postpartum. She visited me once I was settled at home to check on my well-being and helped me remember parts of my baby’s birth story that I had forgotten. After my daughter’s birth, I became a “birth junkie” and had to read every article I found. This is the moment when MY doula suggested I become A doula! This was also when I realized the importance a woman’s birthing experience is and how much it can impact her life by giving her a sense of empowerment or a feeling of defeat. Now it is my passion to be the doula YOU need me to be whether you choose to deliver at a hospital, birthing center, or at home! Thus far, I have attended 18 births since March 2018 and had my second child at home in 2020. I completed my doula training with a local Houston midwife, Shannon Stellhorn, of A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services and finished my doula certification in October 2019. I have also attended workshops on Acupressure (April 2018), Spinning Babies (August 2019), Bengkung Belly Binding (February 2021) and recently (December 221) became a trained Hypnobabies® Hypno-Doula after scoring a 100% on my Hypno-Doula Training and can labor assist mothers who have already taken a hypno-childbirth class such as Hypnobabies® or Hypnobirthing. Additionally, my professional listing can also be found on the Hypnobabies® website under "Find a Hypno-Doula." People love to say “just cover up” or “go feed them in the bathroom” like feeding my baby is supposed to be something hidden or shameful. But here’s the reality: I’m not going to sweat under a blanket, make my baby overheat, or retreat to a bathroom stall just to make a stranger more comfortable.

My child eating is not inappropriate.
My child eating is not offensive.
My child eating is not a scene that needs to be hidden.

We don’t tell adults to throw a blanket over their head while they eat.
We don’t tell adults to eat their meal in a public restroom.
So why is it suddenly controversial when it’s a baby?

Breastfeeding in public is normal.
Feeding your child is normal.
Doing what works for you and your baby is normal.

If someone doesn’t like seeing a baby eat, that sounds like a them problem, not a me problem. I’m choosing my baby’s needs over other people’s opinions every single time.

This is some super cool imaging of a QUAD pregnancy!

A 32-year-old woman with an unremarkable medical history and three years of infertility was diagnosed with bilateral endometrioma and peritoneal endometriosis. The couple was offered Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

First IVF Cycle: Eight oocytes were retrieved, but the embryo transfer resulted in a miscarriage at four weeks.

Second IVF Cycle (six months later): Eight oocytes were retrieved and fertilized, yielding three embryos. Two blastocysts were transferred. At six weeks, transvaginal ultrasound revealed two gestational sacs, each containing two embryos, confirming a quadruplet pregnancy.

The couple was counseled about maternal and fetal risks and offered fetal reduction, which they declined. First-trimester ultrasounds showed normal fetal anatomy. At 16 weeks, cervical cerclage was performed to prevent preterm delivery, and vaginal progesterone was prescribed at 24 weeks.

Due to limitations in complete fetal anatomical assessment via ultrasound, fetal MRI at 26 weeks was performed. The imaging data were used to construct three-dimensional virtual and physical models of the fetuses.

At 32 weeks, the mother developed uterine contractions and dyspnea, prompting cesarean delivery. Four male neonates were delivered with normal Apgar scores at one and five minutes. Two neonates were discharged at 34 days and the remaining two at 36 days post-delivery.

I’m at a new coffee shop this morning for my 2nd consult this week! Loving the vibe here! This coffee shop has little pods/nook areas which are a little more private and where I’ve chosen to set up shop this morning. The pumpkin spice latte is pretty good too! I’m now taking clients due through JUNE 2026 and the person I’m meeting this morning is due in APRIL. Don’t delay in reaching out! My calendar is getting booked FAST!

Did you know, fewer than 10% of births in the U.S. are attended by midwives; even though research shows that midwife-led care can reduce interventions, lower C-section rates, and improve satisfaction for families.

Our Birth Fund helps make that kind of care accessible to all families, especially in underserved communities where cost is often the biggest barrier.

I have no words for this. She could have been crowning at any moment for all that guy knows or she could have been laboring at home already for 15 hours. When someone is ready to go to their birthing location, they’re READY. The audacity of the guy who kept delaying to move his car… seriously. 😳 😬
