Doulightful Beginnings Birth Care

Doulightful Beginnings Birth Care 54 births attended since 2018. Birth Prep Course now available! Free consults available! Hello! This is a decision I have never regretted.

Emotional and physical support during pregnancy, birth, & postpartum to help women make informed decisions about the care they receive both in & out of hospitals. I am Chelsey Hernandez Whitcomb, founder of Doulightful Beginnings Birth Care. As a former teacher, I believe continual education is the cornerstone to our growth as individuals and this was even more true during my pregnancy. When I was

pregnant with my daughter in 2016, I saw “Business of Being Born,” which completely changed how I viewed pregnancy and birth and I realized I had so much to learn! From there, I read Ina May Gaskin’s “Guide to Childbirth” and took a Bradley Method birthing class. It was through this decision that I decided to hire a doula to help at my birth. I learned that a doula offers emotional and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum and that the doula’s primary role is simply to be there for you, your baby, and your partner during this special time. Studies have shown that women supported by a doula in labor have a 50% reduction in c-section rate, 25% shorter labor, 60% reduction in epidural requests, 40% reduction in Pitocin use, 30% reduction in analgesia use, and 40% reduction in forceps delivery. My doula was there for me during my pregnancy, answering every question I had and helping me to interpret the things my doctor was saying. She reminded me of things to ask my doctor and also provided me with evidence based research to make informed decisions about my birth. During labor, I credit my doula with helping me achieve an unmedicated natural birth. She reminded me of my strength and helped me get mentally back into the hardest part of labor. She didn’t take the place of my baby’s father or the other people in my birthing room. She complemented them and added her expertise and guidance when needed, while also reminding hospital staff of my goals and desires for my birth. She showed me how to breastfeed just after my daughter was born, which I still can’t believe we’ve successfully done for 15 months! My doula was also there postpartum. She visited me once I was settled at home to check on my well-being and helped me remember parts of my baby’s birth story that I had forgotten. After my daughter’s birth, I became a “birth junkie” and had to read every article I found. This is the moment when MY doula suggested I become A doula! This was also when I realized the importance a woman’s birthing experience is and how much it can impact her life by giving her a sense of empowerment or a feeling of defeat. Now it is my passion to be the doula YOU need me to be whether you choose to deliver at a hospital, birthing center, or at home! Thus far, I have attended 18 births since March 2018 and had my second child at home in 2020. I completed my doula training with a local Houston midwife, Shannon Stellhorn, of A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services and finished my doula certification in October 2019. I have also attended workshops on Acupressure (April 2018), Spinning Babies (August 2019), Bengkung Belly Binding (February 2021) and recently (December 221) became a trained Hypnobabies® Hypno-Doula after scoring a 100% on my Hypno-Doula Training and can labor assist mothers who have already taken a hypno-childbirth class such as Hypnobabies® or Hypnobirthing. Additionally, my professional listing can also be found on the Hypnobabies® website under "Find a Hypno-Doula." Breastfed babies typically only need 3–5 oz per feed from 6 weeks to 12 months because breast milk composition changes to become more calorie-dense, rather than just increasing in volume, ensuring nutritional needs are met without needing larger bottles.

Unlike formula, which stays consistent, milk volume stays relatively stable while fat content changes, preventing the need for large feedings.

So if you’re “only pumping 5oz” that’s enough!

Share this with a mama who may be wondering why her output hasn’t continued to increase.

That’s a 9.9 lb baby. Wow!

AI is great for some things…but explaining birth? Not so much. Don’t rely on AI for your additional research. Hire a doula. I’m now taking clients due in October and November and consults are free. 😉

AI slop wins again. what in the world is this.

In 2008, Katie Hinde stood in a California primate research facility, surrounded by hundreds of breast milk samples, and noticed something unexpected. The data revealed a pattern that shouldn't have existed. Mothers raising sons produced milk richer in fat and protein, while those raising daughters produced larger volumes with different nutrient balances.

Hinde rechecked her methodology, ran the analysis again, but the pattern didn’t change.

When she presented her findings, colleagues dismissed it as statistical noise or measurement error. If breast milk composition changed based on the baby’s s*x, it meant milk was more than just nutrition—it was information.

For years, breast milk had been considered nothing more than fuel. But Hinde trusted her data, which pointed to something revolutionary.

She continued her research.

Across over 250 mothers and 700 sampling events, Hinde discovered more. First-time mothers produced milk with fewer calories but higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Babies who drank this milk grew faster, were more alert, and exhibited more anxiety. Milk wasn’t just building bodies; it was shaping behavior and communicating environmental conditions through chemistry.

Then Hinde made a groundbreaking discovery.

When a baby nurses, tiny amounts of saliva flow backward into the breast tissue, carrying chemical signals about the infant’s immune system. The mother’s body reads these signals and adjusts the milk composition. Within hours, the milk changes to increase white blood cells and antibodies targeting the baby’s needs.

This was not coincidence—it was a real-time biological dialogue, honed over millions of years.

Hinde was infuriated to find that there were twice as many studies on erectile dysfunction as on breast milk composition. Women's biology had long been neglected in research.

In 2011, Hinde launched a blog called “Mammals Suck…Milk!” to highlight this overlooked field. Within a year, it gained over a million views from parents, doctors, and researchers eager for answers.

Her findings continued to evolve. Milk changed based on the time of day, helping babies wake in the morning and sleep at night. Human milk also contained over 200 oligosaccharides that nourished beneficial bacteria in the baby’s gut. Each mother’s milk was uniquely tailored to her baby’s needs.

In 2017, Hinde took her research to the TED stage, where her talk went viral, watched over 1.5 million times. In 2020, Babies, a Netflix series, introduced her work to a global audience.

Today, Hinde’s research shapes neonatal care and formula design. Preterm infants now receive better care, and formula products are being redesigned to more closely match breast milk.

But Hinde's work does more than change how we understand milk. It challenges the way women’s biology has been ignored in science.

Her research reveals that nourishment is intelligence. The mother-child bond is a conversation, a transfer of vital information. Katie Hinde proved that sometimes, the most profound revolutions come from listening to what everyone else ignored.
