This placenta was nearly 3 lbs! The largest placenta I've ever processed. Which is crazy, since last week I had one that was almost 2.5 lbs! I loved finding that this one was succenturiate. A succenturiate placenta is a morphological abnormality that can cause problems during delivery. It's characterized by a second or third placental lobe, also known as an accessory lobe, that's much smaller than the main lobe. The smaller lobe can develop in the membranes away from the main placental disc and often has areas of atrophy or infarction. In this case a c-section was performed. Thankfully mama and baby are doing well. But check out that one vein, nearly as thick as my thumb!🧡
