Mom Moment: Fire Ants or Hand, Foot & Mouth? 🐜🤒

When my son came home from camp with red, blister-like bumps on his feet and hands, I wasn’t sure what to think. He was tired, a little cranky, and I immediately thought—maybe it’s hand, foot & mouth? 😬

But his siblings insisted:
“He got into the fire ants!”
I brushed it off… until they pointed out the actual fire ant mounds at camp. That’s when the light bulb went off 💡

Turns out, fire ant stings can look a lot like HFMD—especially in kids.

🔍 What Made It Tricky:
• Bumps were on both feet and hands
• He was low-energy (which could point to a virus)
• Blisters looked like HFMD, but no mouth sores or fever

📌 Fire Ant Stings Usually:
• Appear in clusters and may form pus-filled blisters
• Are very itchy or painful
• Happen after outdoor play, especially barefoot
• Often limited to areas like feet, legs, or hands

😷 Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease Usually:
• Comes with fever, sore throat, and decreased appetite
• Causes flat red spots that may blister—plus mouth sores
• More common in toddlers and spreads easily in daycare/camp settings

In the end—it was definitely fire ants. And thankfully, no allergic reaction… but as a doctor and a mom, this was a reminder that these stings can be confusing and even dangerous.
