Never Give Up! That is the message this beautiful patient wants to share! Here you see a vibrant lady who just celebrated her 80th birthday!! When she came to us more than a year ago she was wheelchair bound and in extreme pain due to an aggressive cancer which also entered her bone. Medical Oncology gave her 3-6 months life expectancy based on her current condition. With the expertise and experience of her medical and radiation oncologist and our cancer care team we stand here with her today... healthy, happy and vibrant!! 1. Radiation therapy has over a century of history
The very first use of X-rays to treat cancer happened in 1896—just months after X-rays were discovered. Dr. Victor Despeignes in Lyon, France, treated stomach cancer using X-rays that same year .
2. It’s a cornerstone of cancer care
Around half of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point. It can shrink tumors before surgery or destroy residual disease later on .
3. Two main types: external vs. internal
• External beam radiation uses a linear accelerator outside the body.
• Internal radiation (brachytherapy) involves placing a radioactive source near the tumor .
4. Highly targeted treatments protect healthy tissue
Systems like IMRT, proton therapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery tailor radiation doses precisely to tumor shape—reducing side effects .
5. Surface‑guided radiation therapy (SGRT)
