What is Self-Love? 6 Things You MUST Know!
The conversation about self-love is rapidly increasing but is the knowledge being shared accurately?
The other day, during a conversation I was having with two ladies about self-love, mental health, and healing. One of the women asks, "what is self-love anyway?" For a second, I was stunned. Not sure why. I guess because I haven't been asked that in a while and I haven't spoken about it on my platform in a while, either. The other women standing with us jumps in and explains her view of self-love, which was in my opinion, the typical thing you hear people say about self-love. She giggles and answers, "to me, self-love is about taking care of yourself, being confident, loving yourself, and doing what makes you happy." She's not wrong. But that's not really saying much about what self-love is. If a child were to ask you to explain self-love to them, what would you say? You couldn't say what she said. Why? Seriously? The child will look at you and begin to wonder what taking care of yourself looks like and then they might think that since eating lots of candy makes them happy, that's self-love, right?
We need to be more clear about what self-love really is;
The actions that really need to be taken to activate our internal self-love software.
The thoughts that help encourage us and the ones that help cleanse us.
Self-love doesn't have to be a maze. It's as simple as hopscotch. Take this step, that jump, land on that square and boom, you're there; dancing on the self-love box.
Six Important Things to Remember About Self-love:
1. Self-love isn't only about your outer appearance. It's really about your heart and how it beats for you. It's about owning who you are, who you were, and who you want to be.
2. Self-love is about digging out the weeds of your insecurities and planting seeds of dignity.
3. Self-love is about accepting your mistakes, behaviours, losses, habits, and experiences.
️4. Self-love is about loving every part of yourself and your journey even if it has been unpleasant and uncomfortable.
5. To embody self-love, honesty is key. Acceptance is key. Confidence is key. And readiness is necessary. You need to be willing to change, feel uncomfortable, feel comfortable, feel confused, feel confident, feel renewed, and own your truth.
6. Self-love is a journey that helps you tap into the best version of you. But it requires repeated action.
For a while now, I've been noticing this big misconception about the overall concept of self-love. It's being confused with external appearances, bath bombs, laziness, and most people are leaving out the important part of it all; healing. Let's talk about the healing part of it more because that's how we even come to terms with the concept. When you're on the journey of healing, healing tools naturally appear. Self-love is a tool that we need to constantly sharpen like an iron blade. It's a daily action that must be taken to keep our spirits uplifted, our minds clear, and our focus in the right direction. We shouldn't confuse self-love with laziness. The "stay home to take care of yourself" concept is an absolute needed mantra everyone needs to hear and practice. However, it should be taken as that, a mantra, and not an excuse. There's a thin line between self-love and laziness.
Listen to your body and spirit more. What does it really want? How do you really feel deep down? Self-love requires deep awakening. It's an everyday action, remember? Every day, you are responsible for waking up, picking up a shovel and digging deep down to your roots until you find the puzzle pieces that fit into your healing puzzle. When you find those pieces, hug them. Appreciate them. Accept them. Love them for helping you find your way back to you. Without them, you wouldn't have a clear vision of your healing and growth. They, those problem pieces, help you complete your puzzle. Self-love is challenging yourself to complete your puzzle and using the necessary tools to see it through.
