The percentage of Americans who stay with a single company for 50 years is so low the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t even track it. But they should visit us. Recently, we celebrated two team members who have been here for 50 or more years – Cora, a clinical nurse III in PACU, and Johnny (better known as Sonny), a rehabilitation services technician.
Cora began her career here in January 1973 as a unit secretary. She knew she wanted to be a nurse and made plans. After 10 years, she transferred to the ER, which allowed her to work weekends and attend nursing school at St. Petersburg College. No small feat that she did all this while also raising her son.
Why did she do this and stay for 52 years? “It is like family,” Cora said. “The administrators are wonderful, and Morton Plant Hospital gave me the opportunity to become a nurse. I love nursing and caring for patients.”
Sonny started here in 1975 as a housekeeper. He had career plans too. He wanted to work with patients because he had a brother who was paralyzed. He became a rehabilitation services technician and has been serving our patients for more than 40 years.
Morton Plant is family to Sonny in more ways than one. This is where he met his wife, Janice. She was working the 3 to 11 p.m. shift, and Sonny was working days. He watched her walk in through the ER, turned to a co-worker, and said, “She’s going to be my wife.” He didn’t even know her, but he was right. Almost 35 years later, they are still married and both still work here.
To celebrate Cora and Sonny’s long tenure, Morton Plant Hospital honored them with a reserved parking space in the administration parking lot.
We are honored to be in that rare air of having such long-tenured team members and hope they enjoy their special parking spaces for a few more years!
