Regrowing celery from scraps is a fun and sustainable way to reuse kitchen leftovers and enjoy fresh celery at home. Here's a simple guide to get you started:
Choose Your Celery Base: When you use celery, save the base (the part you usually discard) with about 2 inches of stalks attached.
Prepare the Base: Place the celery base in a shallow dish or jar with about an inch of water. Make sure the cut side is facing down, and the top part (where the stalks come out) is facing up.
Place in a Sunny Spot: Put your celery base in a location that gets indirect sunlight. A sunny windowsill is ideal.
Change Water Regularly: Every couple of days, change the water to keep it fresh and prevent bacterial growth.
Watch for Growth: After a few days, you should start to see new growth emerging from the center of the celery base.
Transplant to Soil (Optional): Once the new celery growth is a few inches tall and has developed roots, you can transplant it into a pot with soil. Use a container that's deep enough for the roots to spread out comfortably.
Care for Your Celery Plant: Keep your newly transplanted celery plant in a sunny location and water it regularly. Celery likes consistently moist soil.
Harvesting: As your celery plant grows, you can start harvesting stalks from the outer edges. Cut stalks from the outside, leaving the inner ones to continue growing.
Remember, regrowing celery from scraps won't yield a full-size celery plant like you'd find in the store, but it's a great way to get some fresh celery leaves and stalks for cooking. Plus, it's a satisfying way to reduce waste and enjoy the process of growing your own food at home!
