The Center for Neurosomatic Studies (CNS) Apply Now: cns.edu The originators of NST, Paul St.

John and Randall Clark, have been educating professionals through seminars, scientific publications, and speaking events for years. The therapy methods have been so successful that there is a shortage of highly trained therapists to treat patients suffering from pain syndromes. CNS responds to this need by providing a comprehensive program that allows students to work while preparing for their new career through a combination of lecture, hands-on practice, clinical practice, and community outreach. The faculty members of CNS bring their expertise in NST and proven instruction methods together to provide a one-of-a-kind educational experience.

🧠 Neuro 1 : The Atlas–Axis Relationship Changes Everything

The relationship between the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) isn’t just a neck issue.
It’s a neurological organizing point for the entire body.

In Neuro 1, students learn:
• How atlas–axis orientation influences global posture
• Why small upper cervical distortions create full-body compensation patterns
• How neurological tone is reflected through cranial and spinal positioning
• Why symptoms often appear far from their true source

When the nervous system prioritizes protection, the atlas–axis relationship adapts — and the rest of the body follows.

Neuro 1 teaches students how to observe, understand, and interpret these patterns before ever attempting correction.

If you want to understand structure from the top down — not chase pain from the outside in — this is where that thinking begins.

C1/C2 isn’t “out.”
It’s being held there.

When someone says their atlas or axis is “out of place,”
the next question is:

What muscles are putting it there?

Bones don’t migrate on their own.
They respond to force.

And in the upper cervical spine — where neurological density is incredibly high — even subtle asymmetrical tone in the suboccipitals, SCM, scalenes, or deep cervical stabilizers can create rotational bias and positional distortion.

The neurosomatic approach asks:

• What neurological input is driving this tone?
• What compensation patterns may have reinforced it?
• What muscles are overpowering its antagonist?
• What stabilizers may have failed to do their job?

When you normalize the neuromuscular imbalance,
the skeletal alignment often follows.

That’s a different level of thinking.

At the Center for Neurosomatic Studies, students are trained to analyze the relationship between muscle tone, neurological input, and joint position — especially in sensitive regions like C1/C2.

While we can “put bones back.”
We can't neglect the forces acting on them.

Hip pain isn’t always a hip problem.

Most people are told:
👉 Stretch it.
👉 Strengthen it.
👉 Rest it.

But what if the hip is just the victim?

The neurosomatic approach looks deeper.

At the Center for Neurosomatic Studies, we teach students to assess:

• Lumbar nerve involvement
• Pelvic alignment and biomechanics
• Functional muscle imbalance
• Compensation patterns from gait and posture
• Core stabilization deficits

Because pain is often the end result of neurological and biomechanical dysfunction — not the starting point.

When you understand the nervous system’s role in muscle firing patterns and joint stabilization, you stop chasing symptoms…
and start correcting causes.

That’s the difference between applying a technique
and applying clinical reasoning.

😬 Relief from Jaw & Facial Pain: How Neurosomatic Therapy Helped

Orofacial pain—discomfort in the head, face, and neck—affects up to 7% of the U.S. population. The most common cause? Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), which can lead to chronic jaw tension, headaches, and muscular pain. Could Neurosomatic Therapy offer relief?

💡 The Challenge
Meet Mark, a 29-year-old struggling with cranial, neck, and muscular discomfort. His pain was persistent and varied in intensity, making daily life uncomfortable.

👐 The Approach
Over 5 weeks, Mark received 8 Neurosomatic Therapy sessions with a student therapist at the Center for Neurosomatic Studies. His treatment included:
✔️ Postural charting before each session
✔️ EMG activity monitoring of key muscles (temporalis, masseter, digastrics, sternocleidomastoid)
✔️ Goniometer measurements to track postural alignment
✔️ At-home exercises to improve posture and muscle balance

📊 The Results? Significant Relief!
✅ Remarkable decrease in pain levels
✅ Reduced muscle tension in key areas
✅ Improved postural alignment

🌟 Why This Matters
Mark’s case shows how Neurosomatic Therapy can be a powerful tool in addressing chronic orofacial pain, offering a non-invasive, effective solution to a widespread problem.
