Gary John Thome, 79, of Clearwater, KS, passed Saturday, July 19, 2025.

Holy Rosary, Thursday July 24 at 7PM and Funeral Mass, Friday, July 25 at 10:30AM , both St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 11000 W Southwest Blvd., Wichita, KS 67215.

Gary was born January 4, 1946, the first of seven children to Roman and Helen Thome. In 1960, at the age of 15, he left for Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis for a year and returned to graduate from Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School in 1964. The following year, he would help his siblings survive a tornado that destroyed the family farmhouse. After a brief stint in computer science, Gary returned to work the family farm where he was “free from the desk.” He continued to farm while also working as a glass glazier in Local Union #558. His work can still be seen in the top of the Expo Center as well as stained glass installations at Kansas Newman College, St. Peter’s and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Wichita. He was a 61-year-member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3114, joining the fourth degree in 2002, as well as a life-time member of Glaziers & Glassworkers Union #558.
He was a faithful man, amateur poet, life-long hunter, family historian and “former Yankee fan” with a rascally sense of humor, which in later years turned into a litany of grandpa jokes. He showed his great love for his family and friends through truck-side chats, hunting trips and abundant forgiveness.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Roman Thome and Helen (Winter) Thome; brother, Bill Thome; sister, Debbie Thome; granddaughter, Kyrie Dawn Thome; grandson, Roman John Stegman. He is survived by his five children, Megan (Chad) Eickholt of Overland Park, Jordan (Lacie) Thome of Valley Center, Rachel (Brian) Cook of Washington, Amanda (Jared) Stegman of Dodge City, Johanna Thome of Wichita and grandchildren, Ainsley Thome, Kamdyn Thome, Kolbe Thome, Brinklee Thome, Emerson Eickholt, Logan Stegman and Tucker Stegman.

Dean Murphy passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, at the age of 94. A loving husband, father, and friend, Dean will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady presence, and the stories he loved to tell.

Born on January 10, 1931, in Lawrence, Kansas, Dean began school at the age of 4 so that his older brother, Les, would not be the only student in kindergarten. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1947 at just 16 years old

He went on to attend the University of Kansas and was on campus during the time of Wilt Chamberlain. In 1951, Dean joined the United States Air Force and served for three years, stationed at Larson Air Force Base near Moses Lake, Washington; one of those years he served in Korea during the Korean War.

On October 24, 1953, Dean married June Harding in Texarkana, Texas. The couple was stationed in Lubbock, Texas, and eventually settled in Wichita, KS where they raised their family.

Professionally, Dean's journey took him from a role at Farmers Alliance Insurance in 1958, to Ohio Casualty, and eventually to co-owning an auto body shop business with a friend.

Dean had many hobbies-he loved fishing, pitching horseshoes, bowling (he once bowled a perfect game), and playing golf, where he had several hole-in-ones. He also enjoyed baseball, softball, genealogy, and, in a twist of irony, collecting the obituaries of people he knew.

Faith and community were important to Dean. He was a devout Christian and a member of Harvest Community Church. He delivered Meals on Wheels and quietly gave back in the ways he could.

He and June were married for many years and shared life's ups and downs-including a tornado that destroyed their home in 1999. But what mattered most to Dean was his family. He deeply loved his four children and was proud of them all.

Dean didn't speak often, but when he did, it mattered, and people listened. He had a way of telling stories full of detail and humor-he remembered names, places, and moments others had long forgotten. His stories often brought a laugh and left a lasting impression.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Clinton Cemetery, 1203 E 500 RD, Clinton, Kansas.

Preceded in death by his wife, LaVonne "June" (Harding) Murphy; parents, Harry and Nina (Anderson) Murphy; siblings, Les Murphy, Ruth Buller, Shirley Wagner, and Henry Murphy.

Survived by children, Michael Murphy of Kansas City, MO, Patrick (Vickie) Murphy of Overland Park, KS, Kathleen Burbach (Jeff Burbach) of Derby, KS, and Deana (Tracey) Stroer of Wichita, KS; siblings, Verna Stanwix, Dale Murphy both of Lawrence, KS, Georgia Oehrle of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Kimberly (Jeff) Sykes, Jaime (Shaun) Zufelt, Jessica (Larry) Brown, Dustin (Christina) Murphy, Megan (Kyle) Pruitt, Holly (Nolan) Mackey, and Kira Kain; great-grandchildren, Levi, Freddy, Scott, Addison, Aysha, and Korben.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials: Good Samaritan Program c/o Wichita Presbyterian Manor, 4700 W. 13th St N, Wichita, KS 67212.

Also preceding in death were her parents Francis and Ruby, sister Darlene and brother Gary and, sadly, son Wesley. In December of 1990 Phyllis married Tom Butherus of Goddard Kansas. Phyllis and Tom lived for 23 years in a west Sedgwick County locale named Shadybanks, a lovely acreage with many trees and 2 ponds, raising Tom's two still at home children, Daniel and Patty. In 2000 Phyllis acquired a Yellow Lab pup they named Buck who became a beloved family member to them. In 2014, Tom and Phyllis (and Buck) reluctantly moved into West Wichita as caring for the Shadybanks property was becoming difficult. However, Phyllis (and Tom) came to love their new home in Redmond Estates for its location and wonderful neighbors. Phyllis was a beautiful woman in many ways and was highly accomplished as well. She hired on as a secretary at the Rollins Hudick Hall (later Rollins Burdick and Hunter, later acquired by AON Brokerage) aviation insurance agency in 1975 and "rose thru the ranks" completing a Bachelor's degree from Kansa Newman University and retiring in 1999 as a Senior Vice President from then AON. Besides her successful working career, she was a Certified Water Safety Instructor, running the program in McPherson Ks for a term. She was an ordained Episcopal deacon and a volunteer chaplain at St Francis Hospital. Phyllis was a very talented musician who provided piano lessons and was a key member of St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church music ministry. She was very active at St Peter's having joined the Catholic Church in 1994, working as a volunteer in teaching religious classes and served as the Director of Religious Education as well as serving on the school council. Further, she spearheaded several church initiatives such as the St Peter Lord's Diner volunteer program and also volunteered there, 24-hour Adoration and Eucharistic Ministry for the home bound. In addition to all this, she served as Tom's crew chief on a 200mph drag race car, where they competed successfully over much of the Mid and Southwest. Phyllis also loved to play Bridge and do laundry! Throughout this time, she was a wonderful spouse, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a dear friend to many. Indeed, she had wonderful friends, a testament to her personality and character. She is survived by husband Tom, son Bradley and his wife Stephanie of Rancho Palos Verdes Ca. daughter in law Becky (Wesley) Hawk of Wichita, Tom's children Tina, Daniel and Patty; grandchildren,Collin, Lauren, Caitlin, Meghan, Weston, Cathryne, Clay, Aryn, Elea, Cyrus, Sorche, Zachary and great grandchildren Bryton, Bowen, Parker, Thomas, Laken, Jaylen, Cody, Ryker, and Zoie
She loved many, was loved by many and is certainly now rejoicing in her Lord but sorely missed on this earth by Tom and her family.
