This week is National Volunteer Week πŸŽ‰ and we are continuing to feature our incredible NAMI Pinellas volunteers.

Today, we are shining a spotlight on David; David found NAMI Pinellas through his mom, Phyllis, who was a member of our Board of Directors for many years.

He shares: "At the age of 29, I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. But prior to attending a NAMI Connection Support Group, I was not aware of having a mental illness. I believe it was addressed as "agnosognosia", which is defined as having no awareness or insight."

He continues: "One never knows when one can become ill, but no one should have to face the challenges of a mental illness alone. Mental health is something we all experience, can manage, and need support with. It affects your family, your friends, your supporters in the community, such as your doctors and case workers. I am not alone in my journey, thanks to the support I have through NAMI, my family, and my friends at Vincent House."

David volunteers in our office on a regular basis, helping our team with administrative tasks. He was recognized as a 2025 Silver all-star volunteer by NAMI Florida. He has also been working to raise money for NAMIWalks Pinellas County on Saturday, May 16, which he has been participating in for 3 years ⭐

We are thrilled to benefit from David's kind heart and to be a part of his support system.

WE πŸ’š YOU, DAVID!

It's National Volunteer Week πŸŽ‰

This week, we will be featuring the incredible volunteers who are the heart of NAMI Pinellas, starting today with Michelle:

Michelle credits NAMI with going from feeling devasted to feeling empowered, happy to support others, and advocate for change.

She shares: "I’ve been volunteering for NAMI since 2022 but have been a member since 2020. My loved one's journey to recovery has had ups and downs and it is because our family had NAMI resources and support that we are all healing, healthy and loving."

She continues: "From the first call to NAMI, the website, the support groups and family to family classes, I have been embraced by others who were willing to say, 'I’ve been there. You are not alone.' That made all the difference."

Today, Michelle is one of our Family Support Group facilitators, a NAMI Family-to-Family class facilitator, and an overall cheerleader of the NAMI mission. She is also a Walk Star for NAMIWalks Pinellas County, coming up on Saturday, May 16. ⭐

We are beyond grateful for Michelle's commitment to mental health education and support.

WE πŸ’š YOU, MICHELLE!

Community makes us jump for JOY πŸŽ‰

While mental illnesses and mental health conditions vary widely, one common symptom is isolation. Too often, individuals and families struggle in silence. and without the appropriate support. That's why our work matters, and why exists: to create community for those who need it.

Join us on Saturday, May 16 to celebrate community with us at England Brothers Park: www.namiwalks.org/pinellas

Michael currently serves as the Director of Grants and Impact at the Florida Council on Economic Education, is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and the founder of Fussner Strategic Solutions. He is also a graduate research assistant with the Florida Center for Behavioral Health Workforce.

We are proud to shine a spotlight on Board Member Andrew Pink today.

Andrew proudly serves as Senior Legislative Aide for FL State Senator Darryl Rouson, is the inaugural chair of the Young Executive Committee for the Arts Conservatory for Teens, and the Youth and Young Adult Pastor at Mt. We are honored to benefit from Andrew's passion for his community and dedication to affecting positive change.

LaToya is a healthcare innovation leader with a distinguished background in strategy development and business transformation. She is the owner and principal of Synthiah Consulting Group and holds an MBA from the University of South Florida.
