After 15 years of working in multiple roles at The New England Hospital for Women and Children, including janitor, cook, and nurses aide, Mary Eliza Mahoney was admitted to the hospital’s professional graduate school for nursing. At 33 years of age, she and 42 other women entered the program. Upon graduation, Mary Eliza Mahoney was one of only four to complete the program, making her the first African American to become a licensed nurse in America. Today, we honor Mary Eliza Mahoney for pursuing her dream, which paved the way for many to follow in her footsteps towards equality.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Leonidas Harris Berry. Along with being a brilliant gastroenterologist, Dr. Berry was a humanitarian. He and many more Chicago medical professionals organized the Flying Black Medics. This organization consisted of nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, paramedics, and biochemists from Chicago. With assistance from the Williams Brothers Medical Clinic, the Flying Black Medics flew to Cairo, Illinois to provide medical care and social services to the city’s most impoverished residents, even during the Cairo race riots of 1970.

It’s Black History Month and we are devoting our posts to the African-American healthcare pioneers who paved the way for advances in the medical field.

Today, let’s look at the life of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams (1856-1931). An African American doctor, in 1891, Williams opened Provident Hospital, the first medical facility to have an in*******al staff. He was also one of the first physicians to successfully complete pericardial surgery on a patient. Williams later became chief surgeon of the Freedmen’s Hospital.
