HEART FATIGUE

Your heart beats an average of 4,200 times per hour, 100,800 times per day. 38,792,000 times per year and 2,715,440,000 times in 70 years. Fortunately, it manages a fraction of a second's rest between each contraction, but is still amazing is the amount of work performed.
Providing the heart is able to function in a reasonably normal manner, it does not show signs of fatigue. However, you are throwing an extra load upon your heart by careless posture. Allowing your chest to drop, your lower abdomen to bulge, the curves of your spine to increase and your Diaphragm to be at a mechanical disadvantage adds to the heart's work load.
Good muscle tone and an efficient posture make for easier circulation of blood, therefore, less stress upon the heart and less possibility of fatigue of the heart muscle.
Exercise of the abdominal wall, deep breathing and good posture are extremely important to the heart's function. Keeping your spine in good alignment and freely moveable minimizes the disturbances to the nerve supply of the heart, thereby contributing to effective function with a minimum of fatigue. "Structure governs function" applies to your heart.

YOUR POSTURE

Good posture may be defined as that arrangement of body structures around the gravity line to permit maximum efficiency with minimum effort.
The gravity line is an imaginary line running vertically through the body at the junction of two planes dividing the body into two equal halves on each side and a front and back half. These divisions should be equal in weight, but not in structure and good posture.
Good posture means much more than a poised figure that is pleasing to the eye. It means a body that functions with a minimum of strain, effort and fatigue. It means that the various organs and structures are capable of functioning at their best, withstanding the stresses of life. It means that the body is best able to avoid the disturbances of function, called disease.
Good posture and good health tend to go hand in hand, because structure governs function.

THE CURSE OF SOFTNESS

Furniture and car seat manufactures have confused softness with comfort. These two do not necessarily go together. Unless a seat gives adequate support to hold the human frame in a reasonably good posture, it is not comfortable no matter how soft.
To permit the spine to sag back into a soft chair is to allow muscles to relax and the ligaments to be placed under tension as the segments of the spine reach their limit of motion. Ligaments are not constructed to withstand continual stretching and will soon begin to complain, causing the individual to squirm and shift in an attempt to find a more comfortable position.
Sinking down into the seat may bring the knees too high crowding the abdomen. Furthermore, as the spine sinks into the back, it may take on a backward curve from base to skull. The chest is compressed and the abdominal wall is thrown into pleats. The internal organs are hindered in their function. Comfort is least likely to result in such a soft contrivance.
Since structure governs function, it is essential that the physical body be maintained in good posture while seated, as well as standing.
