Frank Averill, M.D. is the Medical Director of St. Francis Medical Institute. Frank Averill, M.D. has been recognized as one of the Best Physicians in the United States, Best Physician in Florida, and Best Physician in Tampa Bay. He has also received consecutive Top Doctor awards since 1999 from Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. (1999-2014) and the Consumers Research Council of America (2015). These highly respected awards are a sign of recognition of outstanding medical practice and are given based on the recommendations of medical peers. In 1985, Dr. Averill earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine through the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care, and allergy and immunology at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University. He is also lifetime boarded in sleep medicine. He maintains affiliations with the American Medical Association, American Lung Association, American Thoracic Society and American Society of Sleep Medicine. The staff of St. Francis Medical Institute are highly trained and experienced healthcare professionals who provide state-of-the-art care. The practice addresses the entire needs of the patient by focusing on their physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs, and by focusing on putting the patient first, and providing compassionate care, quality service, emotional support, and understanding. St. Francis Medical Institute offers comprehensive sleep care for all sleep issues including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs, narcolepsy and parasomnia. The Institute includes a comfortable hotel-like, state of the art diagnostic sleep lab conveniently located onsite. Complete care from diagnostic testing to treatment, for all allergy issues including allergic skin disorders, seasonal, pet, environmental, pollen, insect, food and drug allergies. As a board certified pulmonologist, Dr. Averill utilizes a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic options to treat the broad spectrum of pulmonary conditions. These include: Asthma (including Xolair Treatment), Bronchitis, COPD, Chronic Cough, Emphysema, Lung Cancer, Pleurisy, Pnemonia, Respiratory Failure and more. Dr. Averill is a principal investigator who runs an onsite clinical research program. St. Francis Medical Institute conducts Phase II – IV clinical studies. Utilizing Dr. Averill’s 30 years of clinical research experience which began with research he conducted at Johns Hopkins University, St. Francis Medical Institute is able to conduct scientific and medical studies with volunteers to test new medications, devices and medical treatment options. Clinical trials are carefully conducted studies that provide the safest and fastest way to potentially discover new ways to improve health and to find better treatment options for patients. Dr. Averill has also partnered with local physicians, both primary care and various specialties, to manage and implement clinical trials in additional areas of medicine. He is on staff at Largo Medical Center, Morton Plant Hospital and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center.
