🍌Herb of the Day: PLANTAIN (not the banana!)

AI offered a great summary of this overlooked & way underutilized “weed”:

“Plantain is a common herb with traditional medicinal uses for wound healing, inflammation, and respiratory and digestive issues. Its therapeutic properties come from compounds like mucilage and allantoin, which soothe irritated tissues and speed healing, while aucubin provides antimicrobial benefits. It can be applied topically to bites and wounds or taken as a tea to soothe internal mucous membranes”.

Today’s use: Unseen splinter removal!😝

Plantain used as a poultice (plant matter directly on skin) has been known to pull out splinters, glass, and even insect & spider venom! I have something in my finger that has caused some redness but I can’t see anything that’s long enough to pull out with tweezers. So instead of digging around with a needle, I walked to my yard & pulled a few leaves off one of my many Plantain plants.🍃

After giving it a little chew (which I have now dubbed “mouth muddling”) it goes right on top of the irritated area. The saliva allows the good stuff to release. I’ll repeat the process every 30 minutes or so until the object is gone. Works every time!👍🏼
