Hello and welcome to my site! My name is Serenity and I am a birth and postpartum doula. As a birth doula, I help expecting mamas who are seeking a safe, smooth, and natural delivery. As a postpartum doula, I help families right after birth through the first few weeks home with adjusting to life with a newborn! From helping with other siblings to doing light housework to watching the newborn and other siblings while the parents get some sleep or an uninterrupted shower to helping with breastfeeding! I am also a huge advocate for all things natural living and I love essential oils!
From a young age, I was always obsessed with watching TLC's A Baby Story and I loved taking care of people. I always knew I wanted to go into the healthcare field and work with mom and babies. In high school, I discovered the different paths that would allow me to work with moms and babies. There was doulas, midwives, labor and delivery nurses, obstetricians, lactation consultants, and the list goes on! I started working on my doula certification in my senior year while working on a senior project on the differences between midwives and obstetricians. I quickly realized I lean more on the natural side of things and I wanted to be a midwife! So, I had to figure out which path to take to be a midwife. There is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), they have their bachelors or masters in nursing and then go into midwifery. Or, there is a Certified Midwife/Licensed Midwife. I decided to go for a CNM because I could work as a labor and delivery nurse while I worked on the midwifery side of things.
I took all my prerequisites for nursing, I got into a nursing program, then I completed my first semester of nursing school, but did not pass the second semester by a few points. During my second semester, we started clinicals in the hospital. I loved taking care of patients and interacting with them, but then we got more patients and there was less time to interact with patients because there were other patients to take care of and lots of medications to give and documenting to do. Patients were on so many medications! I could not believe it! I myself have not taken as much as an Ibuprofen in over a year because I know the effects that pills have on our bodies. I had to make a decision. Should I redo my second semester and continue on? Or should I go straight into midwifery? Or should I get my Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) Certificate and continue being a doula? I applied to midwifery school and I was going to start Fall of 2019. I found out the school was not yet accredited and I was looking into malpractice insurance and everything along those lines. It was a hard decision but, the best path for me to do right now that still allows me to help women the way I want to is to continue being a doula and getting my CLC!
