A research team from the Gene and Cell Therapy Institute at MetroHealth and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has made an important discovery that could help doctors better treat leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer. The team identified key warning signs in cancer cells and developed a new "smart" drug-delivery system to overcome drug resistance, one of the biggest challenges in leukemia treatment.

With heavy snow melt and lots of rain, now is the time of year when reckless driving can be especially dangerous. As the region's premier Level I trauma center, we often see serious injuries from accidents that could have been prevented. 🚑💦

Hydroplaning – sometimes known as aquaplaning – is what happens when your tires lose contact with the road due to a layer of water. The sudden loss of traction can cause your vehicle to lose control and slide wildly. While hydroplaning frequently happens when drivers pass over pools of water at high speeds, it's possible to lose control of your vehicle whenever the roads are wet. ⛐💥

To avoid hydroplaning, remember to:
🐌 Drive slow
🛞 Maintain good tires
🌊 Avoid standing water
⏱️ Do not use cruise control when roads are wet
📏 Keep safe distance from other drivers

Two decades ago, Christopher Reeve – famous for his role as Superman – received an experimental device implant that revolutionized how spinal cord injuries are treated. The procedure was made possible thanks to Anthony DiMarco, MD, a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at MetroHealth Research Institute, for leading the clinical work behind the historic surgery.

Years later, Dr. DiMarco and his team of researchers continue to make a notable impact in the medical community. Our thanks to WKYC Channel 3 - Cleveland for sharing their story.

More than 20 years after a historic surgery, a Cleveland researcher's work is still saving lives, thanks in part to the man many knew as Superman.

A family-friendly event for all ages, the Resiliency Run honors the strength and resiliency of trauma and burn survivors, and celebrates the caregivers that helped them. Funds raised from the event will benefit trauma and burn survivors who come to Northeast Ohio's premier Level I trauma center for critical care and healthcare needs.

Runners and walkers of all abilities can choose to participate in a 5k, 1 Mile and Kids Dash events. Registration includes a t-shirt and all-day admission to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
