Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Open the palms
• Take a pose in which your bear weight on your hands such as Downward Facing Dog Pose.
• Press all parts of the hand down - the outer edges of the hands, the center of the palms, the undersides of the knuckles and the fingers.
• Especially press the index finger mound, the area below the index finger knuckle.
• Observe how the even, firm pressure of the hands onto the floor effects your arms, shoulders and shoulder blades.
• Connecting the palms strongly to the floor is a way of working with the earth element, which brings stability and steadfastness to the posture.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Reach out into the space around you
• In a standing pose such as Half Moon Pose, extend your energy outward from the center of your body, out through your limbs and into the surrounding space.
• Imagine the reach of your energy moving far beyond the confines of your physical structure.
• Lengthen your spine and imagine space being created between all your joints.
• Notice how this spatial intention affects the pose. Observe how reaching into the periphery changes your balance, your breathing, and your ease in the pose.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Do daily reading about yoga philosophy
• Students of Iyengar Yoga are extremely fortunate that B.K.S. Iyengar was a prolific writer. He has left many books, articles and transcripts of talks for us to study.
• Select a book and commit to a few minutes of reading each day. Try doing your reading in the morning and see how it effects your asana practice and your day.
• A small amount of reading and reflection can have a big influence. A few pages of attentive reading are enough to nurture reflection about how you are practicing, and the meaning of yoga in your life.
• If you are new to philosophy studies, start with one of the more accessible books such as Light on Life or The Tree of Yoga.

Sun salutes help develop strength and mobility while generating heat. They can become a practice in themselves, and are also a good preparation for standing poses, backbends or arm balances.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Reflect on how to relate to others
• In Yoga Sutra I:33, the sage Patanjali describes how we should interact with others.
• We should be friendly toward those who are happy, compassionate toward those who are suffering, rejoice when we see virtue in others, and be non-reactive when we see vice.
• Practicing these qualities leads to citta prasadanam, a graceful diffusion of consciousness.
• Study Light on Life page 94 where B.K.S. Iyengar describes these four healthy movements of the mind.
