Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Reach out into the space around you
• In a standing pose such as Half Moon Pose, extend your energy outward from the center of your body, out through your limbs and into the surrounding space.
• Imagine the reach of your energy moving far beyond the confines of your physical structure.
• Lengthen your spine and imagine space being created between all your joints.
• Notice how this spatial intention affects the pose. Observe how reaching into the periphery changes your balance, your breathing, and your ease in the pose.

Sun salutes help develop strength and mobility while generating heat. They can become a practice in themselves, and are also a good preparation for standing poses, backbends, or arm balances.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Open the Palms
• Take a pose in which your bear weight on your hands such as Downward Facing Dog Pose.
• Press all parts of the hand down - the outer edges of the hands, the center of the palms, the undersides of the knuckles and the fingers.
• Especially press the index finger mound, the area below the index finger knuckle.
• Observe how the even, firm pressure of the hands onto the floor effects your arms, shoulders and shoulder blades.
• Connecting the palms strongly to the floor is a way of working with the earth element, which brings stability and steadfastness to the posture.

Geeta Iyengar often taught rocking and rolling motion to help improve our freedom in twists and forward bends. Here, Karen enjoys the controlled momentum and ease of these gently swinging movements, preparing her for the final Head of the Knee Pose.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Practice with awareness of your skin
• Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Moving with awareness of the skin brings sensitivity and lightness to your postures.
• Stretch your arms out to the side and lengthen the arms further by moving from the skin. Let your breath move into the skin of the breastbone and side ribs.
• Now do a familiar pose such as Triangle Pose. Stretch your limbs and soften your breath while focusing on skin awareness.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that the skin is associated with the air element. We feel the touch of the wind on our skin. Moving from the skin brings discernment and awakens our subtle intuitive intelligence.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Have affection for your body
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that we must have love and affection for our body and what it can do for us.
• We should treat ourselves with maitri, friendliness, and mudita, compassion. (See Yoga Sutra I:33)
• The love we experience toward ourselves can then radiate out to others.
• Read more about these ideas in Light on Life by B.K.S. Iyengar, in the section entitled Perfecting: Always Be Happy with the Smallest Improvement starting on page 54.
