Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Calm the mind through exhalation
• In Yoga Sutra I.34, the sage Patanjali describes one of several techniques for establishing a serene and benevolent state of consciousness.
• To quiet the mind, we can observe and extend the pensive state experienced at the end of a soft and steady exhalation.
• With practice, we can learn to pause before inhaling again, passively remaining in a state of tranquility.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that this practice ensures a state of consciousness which is like a calm lake.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Concentrate on one action
• Create a sequence of 3 - 5 poses that have a common action for your practice of concentration.
• For example, you could focus on pressing your heels strongly down into the floor in a series of standing poses.
• Keep your mind on this single action and observe the various effects or outcomes of the action.
• Observe how your ease and familiarity with the action improves as you move through your sequence. As Geeta Iyengar said, it "becomes known to you."
• Concentration, or dharana, is the sixth limb of yoga, and is considered a pre-requisite for the experience of deeper meditative states of awareness.

Sun salutes help develop strength and mobility while generating heat. They can become a practice in themselves, and are also a good preparation for standing poses, backbends or arm balances.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Set a practice goal
• Create a doable goal for your yoga practice for the coming week.
• You could plan to practice yoga for some realistic amount of time on the days you choose. Put these in your calendar.
• If you are not sure what to practice, use repetition. You could practice for a long period of time by doing the same pose several times, and perhaps changing how you approach it.
• If you miss a day, be gentle with yourself. Yet be determined to show up for yourself at your next planned yoga practice.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Let your asanas be your prayers
• B.K.S. Iyengar said many times that his asanas were his prayers.
• Choose a portion of your practice to focus on the idea of making each pose an offering to the Divine, to God, to your Higher Power, or to the welfare of all beings.
• Let your consciousness rest in the heart region and focus on soft, rhythmic breathing.
• Let the primary aims of the practice be to develop the qualities of devotion and service.
