Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Practice with Gratitude and Devotion
• Begin in a seated position and come to a receptive, quietly attentive state. Chant OM three times.
• Let the breath be soft and rhythmic as you focus on the tremendous blessing of having yoga in your life. Generate a feeling of gratitude to your teachers and devotion to the path of yoga within your heart.
• Once you begin the practice of postures, return to Tadasana (Mountain Pose) regularly - at least every third pose. Remain in Tadasana for several breaths while you again generate appreciation for your teachers, and dedication to the path of yoga.
• Still paying attention to alignment and technique, let the feeling of gratitude be the guiding force of the practice.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Focus on the balance of effort and ease
• In any pose you do, search for the optimum blend of work and release, and of action and receptivity
• Try doing about 80% of your usual effort and see what happens. Does this create more space for breath and awareness?
• Then see how relaxed you can be while still using strong muscular effort in a pose. Can you contract the needed muscles while keeping the face and the breath soft?
• Sthira is steadiness and stability, and sukha is comfort and delight. All yogic practices should have a balance of sthira and suhka.

Rolling from a Plough pose variation to a forward extension is fun and can be done with many repetitions as the range of motion gradually increases. Here Karen is enjoying the controlled momentum of the pose, striving to make it as smooth as possible.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Calm the mind through exhalation
• In Yoga Sutra I.34, the sage Patanjali describes one of several techniques for establishing a serene and benevolent state of consciousness.
• To quiet the mind, we can observe and extend the pensive state experienced at the end of a soft and steady exhalation.
• With practice, we can learn to pause before inhaling again, passively remaining in a state of tranquility.
• B.K.S. Iyengar writes that this practice ensures a state of consciousness which is like a calm lake.

Karen’s Yoga Practice Tip: Choose One Pose as a Reference for the Entire Practice
• Select a basic pose that you are comfortable with, such as Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose), Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) or a seated twist.
• Whatever posture you do, follow it with the reference pose.
• Observe how the reference pose changes as you move through your practice.
• The body will naturally become more mobile, but see if you can notice subtle aspects of the pose.
• Learn to observe the specific effects of other poses on your reference pose.
