Let’s be honest about something that doesn’t get talked about enough.

Black women’s pain is often dismissed.
Our concerns get brushed off.
Our symptoms get minimized.

And it’s costing lives.

We are told “you’re fine” when we know something isn’t right.
We are ignored when we speak up.
We are left to fight to be heard in moments where we should feel the most supported.

This isn’t just frustrating… it’s dangerous.

As Black women, we have to advocate harder, speak louder, and question more not because we want to, but because we have to.

And that’s not okay.

You deserve to be listened to.
You deserve to be taken seriously.
You deserve care that protects you and your baby.

Never feel bad for speaking up.
Never feel bad for asking questions.
Never feel bad for protecting your life.

Your voice could save you.

Let’s have an honest conversation.

Why isn’t lactation talked about louder in our communities?

It’s not because Black and Brown mothers don’t care about breastfeeding.

Many of us were never given the education, encouragement, or support to even know where to start.

Historically, our communities were targeted with formula marketing, lacked access to lactation professionals, and often had to return to work sooner without support.

And the numbers reflect that.

Breastfeeding initiation among Black mothers is still lower than the national average, showing there are gaps in education and resources.

This conversation matters.

Because when mothers are supported, babies thrive and communities become healthier.

Let’s keep talking about it. 🤎

There’s a part of my story I don’t talk about enough.

Imagine having a miscarriage…
Being told over the phone “you’ll be fine at home… your bleeding sounds normal.”

But in your spirit you know something isn’t right.
Your body knows something isn’t right.

That was me.

What many people don’t know is during that time I had a Black doula and midwife in training walking alongside us. And her support mattered more than words can explain.

She didn’t just comfort me.
She educated us.

She pushed with wisdom and intuition and said this wasn’t something to just sit at home through. She helped my husband and I understand what was happening and encouraged us to go to the hospital, even though the medical provider’s advice was telling us otherwise.

Not long after that…
I went unconscious.

I wasn’t even able to consciously make the decision myself anymore.

But because she had already equipped us with knowledge, my husband knew what needed to be done.

And while I was unconscious, she stayed in constant communication with him, helping guide him through what was becoming an emergency situation.

What could have ended in something far worse…
almost a blood transfusion…
possibly fatal risk…

was navigated with support, education, and advocacy.

This is why doulas matter.
This is why culturally aware support matters.
This is why P.A.I.L doulas matter when loss happens.

Sometimes advocacy saves lives.

And sometimes it helps the husband who is standing there terrified trying to figure out what to do.

My story is just one story.

What’s yours? 🤎

One of the biggest things I teach my mamas is this: slow down and ask questions.

Just because something is suggested in birth doesn’t mean you can’t pause and think it through.

That’s where the B.R.A.I.N. method comes in.

Before saying yes to an intervention or procedure, ask:

Benefits — What are the pros?
Risks — What are the cons?
Alternatives — Are there other options?
Intuition — What is my gut telling me?
Nothing — What happens if we wait an hour or do nothing for a moment?

Birth is not something that should make you feel rushed, pressured, or unheard.

You deserve information, time to process, and space to make the decision that feels right for you and your baby.

A good doula helps you slow the room down so you can actually think.

That’s real support.
