My first work about motherhood — 2013-14
And since that moment I found out I was going to be a mother, each work I create holds the foundation of mothering — whether it is in the material, conceptually or visually.
When I started this work, I just graduated with my MFA in sculpture and a few of us got a shared studio space at in 2013…. A week after I received my new studio keys… I found out I was pregnant.. honestly, I thought my art practice was over.
In my graduate studies, I focused on women conceptual artists and women’s studies… not once did the books EVER focus on Artist as mothers or the mention of motherhood within the context of art… maybe I wasn’t looking for it, but regardless, motherhood was never mentioned in a lecture.
So when I became pregnant, it just made sense (subconsciously) that my work continued to reflect my lived experience. Even with this crap documentation, this image has circulated the world. It’s a work that represents my studio practice and I’m beyond proud.
The 12 stills of this time based sculpture documents my pregnancy with my first born. The crocheted sculpture grows around me as I grow my baby, and in this slide, I was one week postpartum, with the intention of closing myself in, then in the next slide, revealing myself as a born mother holding my own baby ❤️ what it doesn’t show is in this slide, I am having a major panic attack—- I was hyperventilating and trying my hardest to get the shot and sweating and crying inside —- as soon as it was take , i literally unraveled it sooooo fast so I could get my baby with me 😭
Mother Infant separation is stressful ❤️
My life’s work since motherhood is doing my best to advocate to families to keep mothers and babies.
It really matters.
