It’s been a little quiet around here because I’ve been traveling the last 4 days.

1700 miles in 4 days, a few distillery visits, 1 minor league team game, Buc-ees, and the main reason?

Orientation for the Doctor of Social Work Program at University of Alabama!

Self care is not only something I encourage with my clients but something I do as well! So my husband and I had the privilege to take some time off, drive down, enjoy food, bourbon, and the beautiful scenery around us!

I’m looking forward to these next three years of school as I know they will be a challenge but with a huge reward!

A recent post by had me thinking about how we label our clients in the medical field.

I’ve spent the last 6 years working as a case manager for clients with physical disabilities, and the amount of “difficult” clients I was given was astounding.

What was more shocking was that these clients weren’t difficult at all. They just knew how to advocate for themselves and were sick of asking for something 4,000x before someone cared.

The other truth is that many of these people just wanted to be heard. They wanted to know the person working with them understood their story, how they got there, and what they need now.

So I urge you, stop calling your clients difficult or needy when they really just need someone on their side. Furthermore, working to remove the term non-compliant from your practice is the ultimate step.

I know “non-compliance” was drilled into my head during internships and school. However, now as a practitioner I realize that it’s rarely non-compliance and usually my ego or me not checking in with my client to see their actual needs.

So I hope this helps you shed some light on your practice. Give a little more empathy, show a little more compassion, and stop labeling people in a way that is hurtful.

Do any of us really know where we’re going?

Today is my last day at the job I’ve worked for the last 6 years. A job that has challenged me in ways I could never imagine.

On August 15 I’ll start a new job and my doctorate program.

The timing seems less than ideal and as a person who loves to be busy, I’m nervous for what the next few months will hold.

I’m looking forward to taking this jump, and I can’t wait to bring you all along for the journey!

Amazon Prime Day has a lot of you feeling a certain type of way.

I’m here to provide some thoughts on my end, a perspective that you may not have thought about before.

As a reminder, Amazon won’t see your posts about how horrible people are for buying stuff on Amazon but the people in your life will.
