"How Should I Start My Car during Zero Degrees Temperature?"

Brrrr...!!! It's cold out there this morning folks! Your imports are surely shaking in their "shoes." Winter has finally kicked in!

Well, aside from our "Import Humor" here are some helpful tips from the Import Experts on how to manage your vehicle properly when cold weather hits.

A question we here frequently around here is:

How often should I start my car in cold weather? Contrary to what most people believe, always starting your vehicle on cold weather may not be suitable for your battery. Repeatedly starting up the car during winter is not just a good idea. It can harm your battery than keep it alive.

The best thing to do after starting up the engine is to drive the car around. Cranking the car without driving it along will only lower the lifespan of the battery.

The wrong notion of always starting the vehicle on cold weather should be corrected. Car experts will not advise you to make this habit over time as it would significantly create damage to your car and battery.

That said, a car that doesn’t start on cold weather is such a troublesome and stressful situation. It would be better to avoid the things that would freeze your battery. A case like this can be avoided if you will follow the simple routines of battery maintenance during the winter season.

Proper starting procedure should be made to prevent exhausting your car battery. Set the car or vehicle for Proper maintenance first.

Here is how you do it:

1. Ensure that you are using the right oil.

2. Checked your battery. Has your battery been tested by us recently? Cells have a lifespan of three to four years. We can conduct a speed test that will quickly tell you if your battery is already weak and dying and already needs replacement. The alternator must also be checked if it is properly charging your battery.

3. Ask for assistance if required. The check engine will light up if your ignition system is encountering problems. You may not notice any changes, but ignition problems may worsen during the cold season.

-Ways to Start the Car on a Cold Weather-

Here is the right way to start your engine during the blustery wintertime:

1. You must turn off all headlights and your heater blower.

2. Put the key on the “ON” position and wait until the dash lights stop flashing. This action allows the fuel pump to pump in more fuel to begin a cold start.

3. Turn your ignition and start cranking the engine for ten seconds. If your car failed to start, wait for another 30 seconds and then give it another try. Never attempt to retry three or four times. If it continues to fail until the third time, then you probably have a dead battery. The only way to do it is to jump start or find any other way to revive your battery.

Here is our Import Service Center Annual Winter Car Maintenance Checklist:

Routine maintenance is a good way to prevent problems with your car, but it becomes especially important as the days get shorter during winter. Where to start?

* Look at your owners manual. It will tell you what the manufacturer recommends when it comes to scheduling specific services. Do what the manufacturer suggests. Neglecting routing maintenance shortens the life of your car and makes it more likely that at some point the car will develop a serious problem.

* If you notice a problem with engine performance, especially if it affects your ability to drive, please come see us and let us get it checked out. This includes issues such as diminished power, hard starts, rough idling, and stalling.

* Keep your tank full and use fuel de-icer in your tank about once a month. Doing both prevents moisture from freezing in the fuel lines; a full tank prevents the moisture from happening, and the de-icer prevents the moisture from freezing.

* Make sure the heater and defroster are working correctly. It's not just a matter for comfort. The heater and defroster also help keep the windshield clear so the driver can see through it. Check all the lights, the treads on the tires, the condition of the spare, tire air pressure, and the jack. The best time to check the air pressure in your tires is when tires are cool.

This is our Import Service Winter Ready Checklist to keep you and your Import on the go and not on the pause on the side of the highway.
