Services for Independent Living, Inc. (SIL)

Services for Independent Living, Inc. (SIL) SIL was founded in 1980 as Ohio’s first established Center for Independent Living

SIL provides an array of individual and community services designed to help and empower individuals of all ages and all disabilities lead healthy, productive lives and participate in community life as they choose. Individual services focus on providing individuals with disabilities access to information and skills needed to facilitate and enhance their independence and to remain in the community of choice. Community services are designed to address barriers to community living and promote the concept of independent living and choice. The majority of SIL Staff and a majority of SIL Board of Directors are individuals with disabilities. All SIL services are guided by the independent living philosophy and SIL’s mission which in turn supports the agency’s vision of a society that is accessible to all people.

Advocacy is important because it helps ensure people’s voices are heard—especially those who may face barriers or discrimination.

At its core, advocacy is about speaking up for rights, access, and fairness.

Here’s why it matters:

🗣️ It amplifies voices
Advocacy helps individuals and communities share their experiences and influence decisions that affect their lives.

⚖️ It protects rights
Laws and policies don’t enforce themselves—advocacy ensures that rights are respected and upheld.

🌍 It drives change
Many major advances, like the Americans with Disabilities Act, happened because people advocated for equality and inclusion.

💡 It builds awareness and understanding
Advocacy educates others, reduces stigma, and promotes more inclusive attitudes.

🤝 It empowers individuals
Learning to advocate—whether for yourself or others—builds confidence and independence.

Great resource from The Autistic Self Advocacy Network - Medicaid 1115 Waiver Advocacy Toolkit

This toolkit focuses on advocating for Medicaid. Medicaid is a health care program in the United States that helps people pay for medical services. Every state operates its own Medicaid program.

States must receive approval from the federal government before making certain changes to their Medicaid programs. One way they can request these changes is through a “1115 waiver.” A 1115 waiver allows a state to test new ideas and approaches within its Medicaid program.

This toolkit will help you understand:
🔸What 1115 waivers are
🔸Why 1115 waivers are important
🔸How you can advocate for improvements to Medicaid programs in your state using 1115 waivers

This toolkit is designed for anyone interested in improving Medicaid, including:
🔸People who receive services through Medicaid
🔸Family members, caregivers, and others who support them
🔸Health care professionals who provide services through Medicaid

If you have questions about this toolkit, please contact Jules Good, ASAN’s State Advocacy Manager, at jgood@autisticadvocacy.org
