Northeast Ohio Coalition of Disability Organizations

Northeast Ohio Coalition of Disability Organizations NOCDO is a coalition of non-profit agencies that bring together community to celebrate The ADA. Bush.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26,1990 by President George H.W. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, state and local government services and programs, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose

of the law is to make sure that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. ADA CLE organized, implemented, and promoted a number of community events aimed at increasing awareness and engaging in a celebration of the civil rights of individuals with disabilities. The culminating event, held 22 July 2015 at Wade Oval in Cleveland, Ohio, was a public celebration and reaffirmation of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the ADA. ADA CLE is comprised of agencies and organizations from Greater Cleveland who share in the mission to provide greater access and opportunity for individuals with disabilities. Along with their various constituencies, all of the agencies and organizations share a commitment to engaging the community at large in order to continue to spread awareness about the ADA and to ensure access for individuals with disabilities.

Do you love staying active, socializing, and giving back? We have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

Quantum LEAP is seeking a dedicated volunteer to join our staff at Walk, Talk, and Roll (formerly known as the Walking Club)! The activity runs every Monday from 5:45 to 7:00 p.m., April 21 to May 19.

You'll support participants as they walk, talk, and roll around the Acacia Reservation (weather permitting) or inside Beachwood Mall.

Although a plus, you do not need any experience with individuals with disabilities.

If you are interested, please contact Ted Sielski, LEAP's Community Education and Activities Coordinator at (216) 456-0832 or tsielski@leapinfo.org.

Congratulations, Sara!

Last night, the Cuyahoga County Council unanimously confirmed Sara Steimle’s appointment to the Board of the Cuyahoga DD.

Ms. Steimle is the first Cuyahoga DD Board member who also receives services from Cuyahoga DD. She was born with Cerebral Palsy.

“I am excited to serve the disability community in this way. My perspective is unique, because not only do I receive services due to my disability, but professionally I serve people with disabilities.” Ms. Steimle said. “So, I am familiar with both providing services and the services that are provided to me personally.”

In the spirit of “nothing about us without us,” Ohio Revised Code Section 5126.021 was changed in 2023 to ensure that people with disabilities have a voice on County Boards of DD. Beginning July 1, 2025, all County Boards of DD in Ohio are to appoint “at least one individual with developmental disabilities.” (ORC Section 5126.021)

“People with disabilities should be represented on boards that make decisions about things that affect them. We are very excited to welcome Sara to our Board,” said Cuyahoga DD Superintendent and CEO Dr. Amber C. Gibbs. “Her professional experience and her demonstrated commitment to the disability community will make her an asset to the Board. Sara has already made significant contributions to Cuyahoga DD through her membership on our Leadership Council. I look forward to the many ways she will continue to contribute to our agency in this new role.”

Prior to her Board appointment, Ms. Steimle was a founding member of the Cuyahoga DD Leadership Council, which consists of five members with developmental disabilities. Its mission is “to modify and improve as well as ease access to services, facilities, and programs being provided by the county board for people with developmental disabilities.”

Ms. Steimle looks forward to serving Cuyahoga DD in this manner. “I think it is important for someone served by Cuyahoga DD to sit on the Board, because it is important for all voices to be heard,” Ms. Steimle said, “especially when what is being discussed has a direct effect on them and the other individuals being served.”

Sara Steimle graduated from Wright State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitation Services. She interned during high school and college at agencies serving people with disabilities.

After graduating from Wright State University, Ms. Steimle worked at a County Board provider agency, where she planned activities and helped people with disabilities learn work skills.

Ms. Steimle is currently the Alumni Program Coordinator at Youth Challenge. She creates and leads programs for alumni participants and volunteers, manages the alumni social media account, assists with disability-awareness presentations in the community, and is the program liaison to their young professionals group. She also represents the Youth Challenge on the Northeast Ohio Coalition of Disability Organizations.

Outside of her work at Youth Challenge, Ms. Steimle serves on the Cuyahoga County Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities. She is also the chair of their Disabilities/Mental Health Subcommittee and their Inclusive Healthcare Subcommittee.

It's officially the holiday season! You may be asking yourself, "what do people with disabilities want?" The answer is simple: they want the same rights and access as everyone else.

At LEAP, we support individuals with disabilities and the aging population with living independently in any way we can through our diverse programs and services. Donating to LEAP this holiday season is the gift that keeps on giving!

As an individual with a disability, you may encounter challenges that others may not completely understand. Your family and friends may try to support you, but be unable to relate to your experiences, making it difficult for them to provide you with the support you need.

We understand this dynamic and have teamed up with other Ohio Centers for Independent Living (CILs) for a unique Peer Mentorship Program. We trained 40 mentees with disabilities to provide peer support to other individuals with similar disabilities. Now, we are looking for mentees!

As a mentee, we will connect you with a mentor who has a similar disability that you can relate to. The two of you will chat regularly. Your mentor will provide peer support, advice, self-advocacy tips, and more! You and your mentor may even develop a life-long friendship!

Don’t wait—apply now to become a mentee today! Your journey to empowerment and support starts with the simple step of applying.
