Two infants in Louisiana recently died of pertussis (also known as whooping cough), as cases continue to rise. According to CDC data, reported cases increased to 35,435 in 2024, up from 7,063 in 2023. Pertussis is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that can cause serious health complications in small children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent it with the DTaP vaccine given at 2 months of age with subsequent doses at 4 months and 6 months, and boosters at 15-18 months and 4-6 years. People in close contact with infants younger than 1 year should get a booster, and pregnant people should get the vaccine during the third trimester. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases, but two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective in preventing children from contracting the virus. Pediatrician and chair of AAP’s Committee on Infectious Diseases Dr. Sean O’Leary joins pediatricians Joanna Parga-Belinkie and David Hill on the latest episode of the Pediatrics on Call podcast to discuss the ongoing measles outbreak and the 2025 vaccine schedule. The flu virus is spreading rapidly in many communities across the country right now! Kids, especially young babies and toddlers, are especially at risk. Most kids will recover fully from the flu in a few weeks with rest and extra fluids, but some kids may experience more severe symptoms and may benefit from antiviral medications started a few days after the first flu symptoms begin.

Your pediatrician can help decide whether antiviral medication is right for your child. Call your pediatrician within 24 hours of the first flu symptom to ask about an antiviral medication if your child:
• Has an underlying health problem like asthma, a heart condition, diabetes, sickle cell disease, a weakened immune system, a neuromuscular condition such as cerebral palsy, or any other medical condition that make them high-risk for severe flu complications.
• Is younger than 5 years old, and especially if they’re younger than 2.
• Has symptoms that are not improving.
• Is in contact with others who are at risk for flu complications.

Talk to your pediatrician or visit HealthyChildren for more info. And remember, there is still time for your child to get their flu shot! https://bit.ly/3dLvPwm
