Fun Fact Friday: Structural brain changes due to obstructive sleep apnea

Did you know that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can lead to structural changes in key brain regions involved in autonomic regulation (the system that controls vital bodily functions to maintain homeostasis)? A study published in Sleep found cortical thinning in the insula and thickening in the cingulate and thalamus, with some changes directly correlating to increased sympathetic nerve activity during wakefulness (Taylor et al., 2018, https://buff.ly/fh9UXFf).

These alterations are concerning because they may contribute to heightened cardiovascular stress, impaired autonomic regulation, and long-term neurological consequences beyond the typical issues of sleep fragmentation and oxygen desaturation.

Did you know that going to bed after midnight could increase your risk of heart disease and early death? A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that individuals who consistently fall asleep after 12:00 AM have a higher risk of all-cause mortality. Specifically, those with a delayed sleep midpoint (the halfway point between sleep onset and wake time) after 4:00 AM were significantly more likely to experience cardiovascular-related and overall mortality.

The study analyzed data from two large cohort studies: the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) and the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS). These findings highlight the importance of not just sleep duration but also the timing of sleep in maintaining cardiovascular health.

Using the Zmachine Synergy, healthcare providers can accurately monitor sleep timing and sleep staging when testing for OSA, giving patients and clinicians actionable insights for better cardiovascular and overall health.
