Progress in Parkinson’s disease research is happening thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). According to recent studies, AI is helping scientists find hidden patterns in complex data, identify new treatment targets, and better understand how Parkinson’s disease progresses.

Using large studies like the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), which include brain scans, genetics, clinical tests, and wearable device data, AI can spot early warning signs, reveal different “subtypes” of the disease, and help researchers design more precise, personalized treatments.

These breakthroughs are helping scientists understand why Parkinson’s disease affects each person differently and move closer to treatments that are tailored to individual needs.

Occupational therapists at our hospital help people return to everyday activities that are important to them after injuries or illnesses. Our occupational therapists focus on rebuilding the physical and cognitive skills needed to safely and confidently manage daily tasks.

Cooking is a daily activity that an occupational therapist may address, working on strength, coordination, and hand control for tasks like chopping, stirring, and using kitchen tools. They also may introduce adaptive equipment to make tasks safer and easier, while supporting skills such as planning, sequencing, and following a recipe. Therapy often takes place in activity-of-daily-living room, designed to emulate home conditions so patients can practice skills in a realistic, familiar environment.

By breaking activities into manageable steps and making simple changes to the environment, occupational therapy helps people regain confidence and independence in meaningful daily routines.

What happens when a brain injury occurs? When the brain is injured, swelling can cause it to take up more space inside the skull, increasing pressure. This can lead to bruising or blood clots, and in some cases, blocked cerebrospinal fluid, causing the brain’s spaces to expand.

Increased intracranial pressure is a major concern, as it can prevent blood from reaching brain tissue, leading to further damage. A traumatic brain injury also can disrupt the brain’s chemical balance, affecting how neurons communicate. This can result in changes to thinking, behavior, and overall brain function, though recovery often happens as the brain stabilizes.

These changes can lead to confusion or agitation. In severe cases, brain injury may cause issues with speech, vision, or muscle strength.

Fatigue is one of the most common and challenging symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), affecting about 80% of patients. Unlike regular tiredness, MS fatigue doesn’t improve with rest. It can hit suddenly and become overwhelming, making even simple tasks feel impossible.

The primary cause is damage to the nervous system, but secondary factors like poor sleep, pain, stress, and medication can worsen it. Symptoms may include brain fog, muscle weakness, and a feeling of exhaustion that worsens as the day progresses.

To help manage MS fatigue, try energy conservation strategies:
• Plan and prioritize tasks.
• Pace yourself to avoid over-exertion.
• Use assistive devices or position things nearby to minimize energy use.
• Allow yourself to rest and take breaks.
• Focus on nutrition, hydration, and sleep hygiene.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can occur from a blow or jolt to the head and impact how the brain functions. Common causes include falls, auto accidents, and sports injuries. If you’re caring for someone with a TBI, the best way to help is by being actively involved in their recovery. Here are some caregiving tips:

• Help the individual stay organized with lists and planners.
• Encourage focusing on one task at a time.
• Be mindful of fatigue and plan activities early in the day.
• Keep a regular routine for eating, sleeping, and exercise.
• Attend healthcare visits and take notes.
• Encourage avoidance of alcohol and drugs as they worsen symptoms.
• Let the person do as much as they can for themselves to promote independence.

If you or someone you know appears to be having a heart attack or stroke, call 911 immediately.

Heart attack symptoms can include chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, pain in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, nausea, cold sweats, or an irregular heartbeat. Stroke symptoms include face drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking or walking, confusion, or sudden severe headache.

Recognizing these signs quickly and calling 911 allows paramedics to start treatment on the scene, providing the greatest chance of timely, life-saving treatment.

Autoimmune diseases, where the immune system attacks the body’s own organs, can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. Common conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, systemic sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, and asthma.

According to the American Heart Association, along with medications prescribed by doctors, lifestyle choices can help support heart health and overall well-being. Consider eating a heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory diet and practice low-impact exercises like swimming or yoga. Try to maintain a healthy weight and incorporate stress management techniques like meditation into your regular routine. Most importantly, if you smoke, stop.
