Wednesdays are for COMMUNITY — where we come together, break bread, and build each other up. Every meal shared and every story told is a reminder that healing doesn’t happen alone. At EmberRise, we rise stronger side by side, every single week.

To anyone watching from the outside—this is your reminder that you don’t have to do life alone. There is a seat at the table for you, a place where you’re seen, heard, and supported. Keep going, and don’t be afraid to find your people—because the right community can change everything.

This week, we are honored to recognize someone on our staff truly extraordinary — Susan Sorrows 💛

Susan has dedicated her life to helping women find freedom in recovery. Her passion for growth in mental health and addiction support is unmatched, and her impact speaks for itself. She has personally helped over 1,972 women take the first steps into recovery homes — changing lives, restoring families, and giving hope where it once felt impossible.

What sets Susan apart isn’t just what she does, but how she shows up. No matter the hour, day or night, Susan answers the phone. She shows up. She listens. She cares.

On top of all that, she dedicates her free time advocating for inmates — simply because she believes in second chances and the power of redemption.

Outside of her work, Susan enjoys planting and caring for her plants and is a sucker for beautiful home decor — bringing that same warmth and care into every space she touches.

Susan, your compassion, strength, and unwavering commitment do not go unnoticed. You are a light in so many lives, and we are beyond grateful for everything you do.

Thank you for being you.

Some days don’t look like progress… but they are.

It’s the early mornings when you don’t feel like getting up.

It’s choosing honesty when it would be easier to hide.

It’s sitting with hard feelings instead of running from them.

It’s taking the long route vs the short one.

Matthew 7:13–14

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”

Sobriety and recovery are not the same thing… and confusing the two is where a lot of people get stuck.

Sobriety is when you put the substance down.
Recovery is when you start picking your life back up.

Sobriety is physical.
Recovery is mental, emotional, and spiritual.

You can be sober and still be angry.
Still be selfish.
Still be broken in your thinking.
Still hurting the people around you.

That’s because sobriety just removes the drug…
Recovery removes the reasons you kept going back to it.

Sobriety is the starting line.
Recovery is the transformation.

Sobriety says, “I don’t use anymore.”
Recovery says, “I don’t live like that anymore.”

Real recovery means accountability.
It means healing trauma instead of running from it.
It means learning how to live life on life’s terms without escaping every time it gets hard.

I’ve seen people sober for years… still miserable.
And I’ve seen people in true recovery… full of peace, purpose, and growth.

So don’t just chase clean time…
Chase change.

Because at the end of the day,
sobriety might save your life…

…but recovery is what makes your life worth living.

There’s something about the mountains of North Georgia that reminds us who we are.

They don’t rush.
They don’t break under pressure.
They stand tall through storms, through seasons, through change.

And just like these mountains, so do we.

At EmberRise, healing doesn’t happen overnight. It happens in the quiet moments… in the hard conversations… in the days where getting out of bed is the biggest win. It happens when you choose growth over comfort, truth over denial, and courage over fear.

Some of the women here are walking through the hardest chapters of their lives—but they are not staying there. They are rebuilding. Rising. Becoming stronger than they ever imagined possible.

Because no matter how far you’ve fallen…
no matter how heavy your past feels…
you are still capable of rising.

Today, we keep going.
Today, we choose healing.
Today, we rise—together.

Letting go of the past
Page 86

"It is not where we were that counts, but where we are going."

Basic Text, p. 23

When we first find recovery, some of us feel shame or despair at calling ourselves "addicts." In the early days, we may be filled with both fear and hope as we struggle to find new meaning in our lives. The past may seem inescapable and overpowering. It may be hard to think of ourselves in any way other than the way we always have.

While memories of the past can serve as reminders of what's waiting for us if we use again, they can also keep us stuck in a nightmare of shame and fear. Though it may be difficult to let go of those memories, each day in recovery can bring us that much farther away from our active addiction. Each day, we can find more to look forward to and less to punish ourselves for.

In recovery, all doors are open to us. We have many choices. Our new life is rich and full of promise. While we cannot forget the past, we don't have to live in it. We can move on.

Just for Today: I will pack my bags and move out of my past into a present filled with hope.
