Let's talk about New Year's goals that actually stick.
Sustainable change happens when we work with—not against —our natural tendencies.
Pair what you need to do with what you enjoy doing (ie: call a good friend or listen to a favorite podcast while taking a walk).
Associate a new and desired behavior with something you already do habitually ie: put your daily vitamin next to your toothbrush so that you remember to reach for the vitamin when you engage in the daily habituated task of brushing your teeth).
Let's make our natural tendencies work FOR us, rather than fight against them.
Let's talk about New Year's goals that actually stick.
Sustainable change happens when we work with—not against —our natural tendencies. We're wired for pleasure-seeking and pain-avoidance, yet most resolutions require pain-tolerance and pleasure-avoidance! No wonder we don't stick to them. We can't. Not for long, anyway. Changing our habits, even for the better, is painful since it requires us having to work and pay attention to do something differently than what we're used to.
Instead, pair what you need to do with what you enjoy doing (ie: call a good friend or listen to a favorite podcast while taking a walk).
Associate a new and desired behavior with something you already do habitually. Such association offers a natural reminder, which builds natural habit change (ie: put your daily vitamin next to your toothbrush so that you remember to reach for the vitamin when you engage in the daily habituated task of brushing your teeth).
Let's make our natural tendencies work FOR us, rather than fight against them.
