Upstate and rural hospitals across New York are in crisis, and IHA’s Kevin Kerwin recently had the opportunity to speak with CBS6 Albany about this critical issue affecting our communities.

The Iroquois Health Alliance supports more than 50 hospitals in 32 counties across Upstate New York. The proposed Medicaid & Medicare cuts could have devastating, long-lasting effects on our healthcare system and our communities.

These cuts will directly affect access to healthcare for our seniors, children, newborns, pregnant mothers, disabled individuals, and veterans - all who rely on Medicaid or Medicare funded healthcare services.

Upstate and rural hospitals aren't just healthcare providers - they're anchor institutions that hold our communities together. When we lose these hospitals, we lose jobs, services, and ultimately, people from our communities.

This isn't just about healthcare - it's about the future of Upstate New York.

The Senate's budget reconciliation bill poses a serious threat to healthcare access across Upstate and rural New York. With nearly $1 trillion in proposed Medicaid cuts, our already financially strained hospitals face potential closure, job losses will devastate local economies, and families will lose access to essential healthcare services.

While the proposed $50 billion rural hospital stabilization fund acknowledges the problem, it falls far short of addressing the comprehensive damage this legislation would cause to our communities.

We're calling on all New York representatives to vote NO on this bill to protect our healthcare system and the communities that depend on it. Our rural hospitals and the families they serve cannot afford this devastating blow.

Kevin Kerwin of Iroquois Healthcare Association "Hospitals have to budget. They have to try to figure out what programs they can provide, and this just makes it all the more difficult."

The House Energy & Commerce Committee just advanced legislation cutting $625 billion from Medicaid over 10 years. This threatens the survival of Upstate and rural hospitals that have been underfunded for years.

As our interim CEO Kevin Kerwin warned in tonight's WRGB CBS 6 News, Albany interview: "If there's not a reimbursement mechanism for those seeking healthcare, hospitals won't be able to cover those costs, contributing to negative margins and limiting their ability to provide services."

The CBO estimates these cuts would leave 10.3 million Americans without Medicaid coverage and increase the uninsured by 7.6 million by 2034.

Our rural hospitals are anchor institutions — often the largest employers and essential safety nets for vulnerable populations. They need support, not devastating cuts that could eliminate vital services.
